New driver needed for Microsoft Mouse

I've searched but cannot find if there is an updated driver that will work.
The mouse is basic but keeps disconnecting and quickly reconnecting every few seconds .
I have an old Microsoft intellimouse (I think that's what it was called) model ite 78cj that connects via usb.

There seem to be websites that have later drivers but I don't know if the websites are safe.

The version I have at the moment is: 6.3.9600.16384

I wouldn't worry about that. The date June 21, 2006 is applied to all drivers that Microsoft supplies, it bears no relation to the actual age of the driver.

Win8.1 has built-in drivers for that old Microsoft intellimouse model so you really do not need a new driver

I think something had gone wrong with the laser of the mouse.
I'm now using a basic Dell mouse i forgot I had, with no problems.

in other words, it was a hardware problem (the MS mouse itself - probably has been worn out)
