New Acer Lap Top came with Linux - How to Install Win 7?

Could I try to install Windows 8 and then Downgrade to Windows 7, is that even possible?

Acer e1 510 linux model boot problem

Does anyone understand what this means?

"Finally, if Linux (and the GRUB 2 loader) is still on there, you can hold down the left shift key during boot. Go into the GRUB console and chainload the Windows /EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi or /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi. You can even do this from a Linux live DVD. I've done it before."

Shift during boot brings up the Linux boot menu - chainloading refers to Linux bootloader (Grub) attaching Windows bootloader to boot Windows - that's the theory anyway...

Ok, does that help us in any way? Does it give us anything to try?

Don't give up on Windows 8 just yet...not sure about downgrading - there is an outside chance a registry trick may work...

Maybe worth a try.. i only get my bog standard Mint menu (which is usually hidden) - not exactly sure what that guy was hoping to achieve though.

I'm going to try something called "Ultimate Boot"...

I have it from a few years ago when I had an issue with installing Windows XP on a machine...

I doubt it will help, but I'm down to my last few options...

By the way, with the new BIOS i lose my guarantee, right?

Nope.

I'm thinking of going to the shop tomorrow and demand windows 7 or my money back!

Because when I was inquiring about the lap top I asked specifically:

"Does it support Windows 7?"

And the guy said specifically:

"It still does [chuckles]"

So, am I an a**hole?

Nope that salesperson is...guess what? he's gonna refer you to Acer most likely!

No, I don't care, he said it's possible, and so I want him to fix it!

I wish they have the recording of the conversation so that I can threaten legal action if they decide to monkey around with me!

On the other hand, as I stated in the beginning of this thread, my peace is very important to me, and going there and getting into all that is something I'd rather avoid, even if it means settling for windows 8...

But, I buy a new computer and expect to get a simple thing, and then I don't get it, so I pay to settle? That's not fair...

Anyway, what I'll try to achieve with this Ultimate Boot thing is to - if possible - avoid having windows load through the lap top at first, so to boot through the Ultimate Boot thing/program, and then maybe when it gets past the initial booting it will allow the rest of the process to continue...

I know, it probably won't work and it's a loooong shot, but it's the last one i got left...

Or rather, the one before last.

The last is to mount Windows XP on a USB and try to install that. I read on a Serbian forum I came across that a guy said that he couldn't get Windows 7 to work on some lap top (even though on the manufacturer's website it said it's possible), but he was able to install XP..

And then, if I can install XP, I can Upgrade XP to windows 7, and solve my problem...

Haha, how's that for wishful thinking? :p

IF that ALL fails, well, either settle for windows 8 (if even that works), or go to the shop and raise hell...

I'm so way out of my league..

But then, on the other hand, Windows 8 is the future, isn't it?

Windows 7 will probably become obsolete and unsupported in a few years, just like what happened with XP...

I'm the guy that sticks to what he knows, sticks to PC computers for years even though lap tops are mainstream, sticks to XP until the bitter end, I still use stupid phones even though everybody has a smart phone nowadays, etc...

It's just being comfortable with what I know and the loyalty in me...

But maybe I should put my spear down and go modern on this one, go Windows 8...

I don't know man, my mind hurts at the moment (I exaggerate for effect).. heh

But why am I not able to begin the windows installation directly from my desktop?

To turn the lap top on into Linux Mint, go to my computer, and double click the setup to start.

I thought Linux was this superior operating system thing? Can't even open a simple setup.exe file (I'm being a bit sarcastic)...

Windows executables cannot run on Linux.
In as far as Windows 8 is concerned, I was one of it's harshest critics initially, but with the changes made subsequently, and a few tweaks, it's better than even Windows 7 (for me anyway)

I'll try this Ultimate Boot thing.

Then I'll try Windows XP installation. If it works, then upgrade to Windows 7.

If these fail, I'm out, I admit defeat, they won..... :(

Yesterday when I bought my USB in order to install Windows the guy at the shop asked me what do I need it for, and I told him.

Then he said if I fail I can take it there and he'll install Windows 7 for a low price. Of course, he has no idea what model I have, so I doubt they'll be able to do better than what we did here...

I have 3 options left

1) Take the lap top to this shop and hope they get win 7 running.
2) Take the lap top back to the store I bought it from and see what happens.
3) Keep the lap top and try to install Windows 8 on it.

Tell me guys? What would Jesus do? haha

But do you even think Windows 8 would run on this machine? With everything you've seen so far?

TBH, I have more hope for Windows 8 - most posts on other forums suggests no problem.. or I may have missed something.

Yeah, Windows 8 should work, I mean, if it doesn't, what is acer doing here? War on Microsoft?

Anyway, Ultimate Boot took almost an hour to Mount to USB, even though it's only around 500 MB in size...

Here goes nothing...

The Ultimate Boot USB wasn't recognized...

I'll try to copy the files from it on my computer, then format it with FAT32, and then copy the files back... Like I did earlier today when trying to get windows 7 running/recognized..
