Ill double check if the current thing im trying doesnt work. I got a couple more option including a ei.cfg mod image I just burned to try if the one in it right now doesnt.

Adding one, my Windows 8 images don't have an ei.cfg file?

Correct, but I read that adding one it would use it. Cant hurt to try :\

Yes, it will, if you put the correct info in it. I think that was a trick to let you skip entering a product code. What I mean is, leave it empty/blank and install in trial mode with 30 days to enter a code and activate. Right now I don't think you can install without entering a valid product code.

I have that code that microsoft gives out to load without a valid key. I just need to get it to showup as a OEM load inside windows. Which is what I set the cfg file to. So we will see. Loading from a external mini rom is horribly slow.

Yeah, this was before the generic install codes were leaked. The early early days of Windows 8 after the previews were over.

Hello! I followed this thread tutorial to make a clean install of windows 8.1 on my brand new lenovo y50-70. It was pretty fast and easy! Before i switched from hdd to ssd i checked the windows version and it only said windows 8.1.
Now that i made the clean install and have the ssd working on this laptop windows says its not activated. Anyone can help me find the correct version of windows which i have to download and install?

Look into getting a tool that reads the "msdm" key. Try clicking enter key and put the key it shows you and see what it says or if it activates. I looked up your model and it looks to be a higher end laptop which means it shouldn't be a "with bing" model.

Post back if using a utility to pull the key from the motherboard works. Also note that you have to load the drive in efi mode in the bios and not legacy. If you switched to legacy to get to use the boot menu it cannot get the key.

Try this, Showkey - Windows 10 Forums Then see what it says for OEM Key and OEM Version. My guess is its 8.1 Single Language, Core and Core Single Langauge use to different sets of keys that are not interchangeable. The COA sticker would just say Windows 8 or Windows 8.1

Thanks all for helping. Actually there was no need for that. I was forgetting to connect to internet and activate windows. The moment i connected the laptop it got immediately activated and everything was fine.
Anyway, thank you all once again!

1) while selecting language before downloading, it shows only English(US) and English(UK). My machine runs with English(India). Will it have any effect on installation and key recognition?
2) Does this installation creates recovery and restore partition? ie whether can we do refresh and reset with this installation.

Yes, if you have the installation media for Windows 8.1.

Yes, if you have the installation media for Windows 8.1.

Yes.

When you Refresh or Reset Windows, it will reinstall Windows 8.1, but only if you have Windows 8.1 USB/DVD installation media.

You must insert Windows 8.1 USB/DVD installation media.

If you don't insert any installation media or if you insert Windows 8 USB/DVD installation media, then you receive the following error message: "Insert Media. Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files." (see screenshot below).

It's doing it for me too, hopefully its just temporary glitch.

Yes.

Thank you very much. I have downloaded iso. Can I use rufus to put in USB or just copy files and folders from mounted iso to USB.

I downloaded the windows iso from windows dvd/usb creation tool.. made a UEFI USB install with the downloaded ISO.. then installed.. No problems.. worked perfect

I used Rufus to make the UEFI USB...

It is best to use the ISO downloaded from Windows Creation installation DVD/Usb tool.

. but just for kicks and giggles, people have posted up MSDN technet ISO of the latest windows where you don't have to download too many updates.. They are verified and legit by hashtag and checksum / cyclic redundancy check (CRC) values.. Just throwing that out there..

but you have to get them from reliable sources of course..

The MSDN ISO can install Core or Pro depending on the key entered or detected during setup. There is no SL MSDN ISO though. It's not listed for me anyway.
