need freeware app for an easy photo gallery

Hi, I have a desktop windows 8.1 64 bit pc. I found there is no photo program installed like there was in Windows 7. I want to straighten the photos, brighten, adjust shadows and maybe high light. I don't do well with bells and whistles and a dozen plug-ins. I am 70 and home bound with lots of pain and it messes with my memory. I downloaded one from Microsoft that said FREE but once in at the very bottom it said buy. I don't have the money to buy anything extra. I would appreciate any help you can give me as a freeware search shows up with nothing. Thank you so much! Bonnie

It only claims to be a picture viewer but it has additional capabilities and can do the things you are looking for.
