My Win 8.1 laptop cannot join the homegroup on Win7 PC

The 8.1 laptop says it detects the homegroup and prompts me to join it. I go thru the steps, including the correct password. Then, after a minute or so of looking, the laptop says it no longer detects a homegroup on this network. I can't find anything wrong. All the settings seem to be correctly set. What am I doing wrong?
