My Switch from iPhone to Windows Phone

When I joined Aptera, one of my friends had the Windows Phone 7, and he seemed to like it pretty well, but he was ex Microsoft so I dismissed it as brand loyalty. Recently, though, he got the new Lumia icon phone with Windows 8.0 and seemed very happy with it. I liked the screen size, the interface, the responsiveness, and the reported battery life. Don’t get me wrong, I love iPhone and what it did to the industry. I believe it paved the way for all the modern Android and Windows Phones by proving smart phones were a device people not only wanted, but would use practically every waking moment. However, iOS seemed to me to be showing its age. It was more of the same with no real innovations with any “wow” factor. And screen size: the Lumia just had the iPhone beat here.

Specifically which apps, Patrick?

For personal use: RunKeeper. Torque. Dropbox. Amazon MP3 app. HBO Go. Sirius/XM, YouTube
For my kids use: Minecraft, CandyCrush, Clash of Clans
For work use: TouchDown, GoogleMaps, GoogleTranslate,

These are a few that I could think of off the top of my head.

We wrote/discussed before about the RunKeeper app. I know that’s important to you for sharing with friends. No RunKeeper for WP yet.

Torque > There’s a one OBD Auto Doctor app that’s equal.

MS just made a deal with Dropbox.

Amazon MP3 app > There’s an Amazon app. Not sure all that it does. There are tons of MP3 apps for downloading music.

HBO Go > There’s an app called HBO Home HD which plays HBO.

Not anything titled Sirius/XM, but tons of apps that are equals.

There’s definitely a YouTube app.

Sorry. Didn’t take time for games. I’m sure there are tons.

TouchDown > Use Outlook. :D

Of course you know that there won’t be GoogleMaps or GoogleTranslate. That would be desecrating any WP. :p Bing maps and translator are just as good.

I can understand you being a man in your position professionally and socially that you would want and use an iPhone and branded apps. It’s all about prestige. A professional image is quite important. There’s nothing wrong with that. The point is that the apps excuse is really no valid excuse anymore so far as WP vs iPhone or Android. It’s more a prestige thing if anything because of branded apps, but you nor I would never own an Android again now would we? ;)

Ok, I see now. Thanks for the support. :thumb:

Yes, now on a fixed income and not be tempted to splurge. I could afford $20/mo more for unlimited and probably would if I lived in the boonies, but around here in the big city there's plenty of WiFi hot spots. I'd rather spend that on something else than give it to my carrier.

Besides, I very much dislike any American service providers who now I read are all for Net regulation so far as data traffic/flow goes. Our president sure put a wrench in their gears yesterday! :D

Net neutrality gives everybody access to appreciable speed and bandwidth, am I correct? Or is it something else? It restricts data limit?

Correct. What's the most frightening thing is that the government (FCC) is getting involved. Our government is too big and controlling as it is. It has no business controlling fiddly squat in a lot of areas. Stay out of it. Next things are corps buy or influence these people with bribes or campaign contributions to their advantage. Things are getting way out of hand in this country IMO. I'm sure you can relate being from India. ;)

Obama inflames divisive debate on 'net neutrality'

Torque > There’s a one OBD Auto Doctor app that’s equal.
I'm unsure if it's an equal. You can customize Torque a ton and log, etc.

MS just made a deal with Dropbox.
That is a good thing. I'm a long time dropbox user. I've tried all of the other service, and always come back to dropbox.

Amazon MP3 app > There’s an Amazon app. Not sure all that it does. There are tons of MP3 apps for downloading music.
I'm not looking for an app to download music. I happily buy all of my music from Amazon MP3. they store all of my music in my amazon cloud. I get a ton of free music based on my Prime membership.

Not anything titled Sirius/XM, but tons of apps that are equals.
Equals don't help if you pay for a Sirius/XM subscription. We have it in our cars. It's nice to make use of what you already pay for.

Of course you know that there won’t be GoogleMaps or GoogleTranslate. That would be desecrating any WP. :p Bing maps and translator are just as good.
I've never found anything "bing" related to be better. Google maps is what my company uses.

I can understand you being a man in your position professionally and socially that you would want and use an iPhone and branded apps. It’s all about prestige. A professional image is quite important. There’s nothing wrong with that.
Ummmm...an iPhone. I think not. I hate iTunes, i don't use phones that don't support external memory cards. Maybe you got confused since I do own a MacBook Pro (in fact using it for this post). Even on my MacBook, I don't use iTunes. I use the Amazon MP3 app.

I'd own a Blackberry long before an iPhone. I'm a Samsung Galaxy S3 Android user. In fact, I'm so happy with that phone, that even though I'm eligible at work for a free upgrade, I simply replaced the battery today because I have no interest in changing phones.

Well, Patrick. It looks like you're in luck. Be the first kid on the block with one. Including RunKeeper Elite no less.

I don't wear a watch, or any jewelry on my hands. Drives me absolutely nuts. I only wear my wedding ring on very special occasions. So, there is no way I'll be getting one of these devices or the dump smart watches.

My battery in my Samsung Galaxy S3 has recently started to not hold a charge like it used to. It used to easily last all day, but over the past couple of months, it seems like I cannot get more than about 6 hours without having to get the phone onto a charger.

My phone is 2.5 years old and at work, I'm eligible to upgrade to a new phone every 2 years. Work pays for the phone.

So, I toiled long and hard trying to decide which new kickass smartphone I was going to buy and I finally reached a conclusion................. (I bought a new battery for my Samsung S3, after 3.5 hours the battery has dropped less than 10%). WINNING

Tried resetting to factory? May be some software update is available too, check them up.
I think it'll take 3-5 complete discharge cycles to start getting average up-time.

My new battery went 18 hours yesterday and wasn't even dead when I put it onto the charger., compared to my normal 6.
