My Switch from iPhone to Windows Phone

When I joined Aptera, one of my friends had the Windows Phone 7, and he seemed to like it pretty well, but he was ex Microsoft so I dismissed it as brand loyalty. Recently, though, he got the new Lumia icon phone with Windows 8.0 and seemed very happy with it. I liked the screen size, the interface, the responsiveness, and the reported battery life. Don’t get me wrong, I love iPhone and what it did to the industry. I believe it paved the way for all the modern Android and Windows Phones by proving smart phones were a device people not only wanted, but would use practically every waking moment. However, iOS seemed to me to be showing its age. It was more of the same with no real innovations with any “wow” factor. And screen size: the Lumia just had the iPhone beat here.

Being in construction I've been cellular since bag phones. The best phone I've owned to date is my Lumia 1520 phablet. A very portable and handy device. I read somewhere that 1 out of 4 smart phones being sold today are phablet size. Even Apple released the iPhone 6 Plus. I recommend to anyone looking for a new phone to at least look at the Windows phone and a phablet size to boot. Pun intended. :D

I like the windows phones. In the very unlikely case that Blackberry phones are no longer useable I'd get a Windows phone.

I switched to Windows Phone at the beginning of October and have not regretted one day. I have the Lumia Icon which still hasn't been upgraded to 8.1, but the promise is there;O) So far, I've replaced every app with a comparable one on Win8 except for a decent shopping app....need an Out of Milk for Windows....and yes, I've informed them! I find the Icon plenty large enough but still able to carry in my jeans' pocket. Very easy to figure out, and I'm still on Win7 for computer. Also, the photos cannot be beaten, they are very good quality. I was leaving Droid, but almost was convinced to get iPhone for the Adobe apps. I discovered what they did and didn't do and turned to Windows8 instead. Conversed with my son (long time iPhone man) and he's converting, so became a no-brainer. Battery life is just plain too cool as well...typically two days before recharge and I use it a lot. Highly recommend - and this coming from a person who typically hates Windows (I'm a dos gal) and heretofore not a Nokia fan.

Hello, LafnSu. Welcome to Windows Eight Forums. :)

Well, now we're up to 11% of the market share, then your son will make it 12%! :p

All kidding aside, little by little Windows phone will gain market share. Now that MS licenses are free to manufactures a lot more of them are providing Windows phone. That makes the playing field more even.

And yes, the non-sufficient amount of apps is no longer a reason, although I would agree at first it was. That's not to say all the apps are there yet. TouchTunes jukeboxes is one I'd like. My bank is another. I write them every so often to nudge them.

I got MS Office phone version free, some OneDrive storage free, a lot of free apps, and other free services. Comparing oranges with oranges the Windows phone is way ahead.

Thanks for posting your enthusiastic viewpoint and, again, welcome to the forums. :)

I do like my phone (was Windows Phone 7.5, now 7.8) but I do miss out on apps which some companies provide.

For instance my bank has smartphone apps, but not one which would work on a Windows 7.x phone.

I think Windows Phone 8 is better than mine in terms of compatible apps, but there are still organisations who only offer Apple and Android versions. :(

This is very true:

Then one day I was on a call with one of the salespeople who joined a Lync conference with video from his Windows 8 Phone while opening a Word proposal from his OneDrive. I knew I had to have that kind of functionality in my work life. You always hear that Office on your phone is a good reason for a Windows Phone, but I didn’t believe it until I saw it in practice. My mind was made up.

You don't believe how nice it is before you try it by yourself. I am a very happy Windows Phone user.

For personal use: RunKeeper. Torque. Dropbox. Amazon MP3 app. HBO Go. Sirius/XM, YouTube
For my kids use: Minecraft, CandyCrush, Clash of Clans

I'm switching from AT&T to Verizon at the end of the month and so i have to give up my beloved Nokia Lumia 920 since it will not work on Verizon's network. My wife and daughter have the Lumia 928 and I'm not as happy with that phone so I may get the M8. I have been very happy with Windows Phone and I really want to continue to use it.

Applications are programs I run on my computers, for fun and work, both. I laugh these days when I hear descriptions of 5"-6" screen sizes, spoken of in hushed tones of awe and wonder... I laugh because I can still clearly recall my first Amiga monitor purchase in 1987--being a 12" screen which I thought even then was far too small...! 5"-6" sound like a prescription for eye-strain to me and little else. The iPhone in particular reminds me of my 1987 Amiga Workbench screen--program icons everywhere--uh, which I know HypsieG doesn't much care for...:) Major difference is that it is less than *half* the size of a screen that was too small for me in 1986!

Listen, I have nothing but admiration for people still using dumb phones because they're the folks getting the absolute best deals going for cell-phone usage...They're the "smart people", imo. The very best thing a person can do for himself in terms of tech wisdom today is to never get his so-called "smartphone" confused with his personal computer. The similarities are superficial at best, sort of like confusing a walkie-talkie with a megawatt FM broadcasting station...:geek:

Laugh, hah? I know I'm treading amongst some dinosaurs, so I must needs be careful. I guess some just haven’t caught up to the 21[SUP]st[/SUP] century.

Excuse me, Walt, but according to your sig you must have not wrote that for you are quite mistaken in every way > And for whomever wrote that obviously never had a smart phone/phablet or used one to be qualified to give such a critique > And no, I won’t “listen” to a bunch of hot air. :D

Firstly, how big is/was your wrist watch dial? The dials/knobs/digital settings on your kitchen stove? The settings on your microwave oven? Your car radio? The font in books/newspapers/magazines you read? On your monitor at the present? One thing about screen size is that more of font and/or pics are showing > That is all. Of course one can change the font size on just about any modern device's screen > Even a smart phone. And, ah, Walt > You can actually turn a smart phone/phablet sideways for larger text. OMG! Yes! Quite an ingenious idea! :p

Gotta go!.....

Ok, I'm back. Started this in Word after reading your post on my, ahem, "dumb phone" while waiting for the fiancé during her doctor appointment. Saved it to OneDrive and now back at my PC. Do you understand that technology and can you keep up, Walt?

Where was I at?....Oh yeah, font size.....Holding my 6 inch Lumia up to my tower PC monitor, these shots are approximately 1/2 inch larger of actual size in each direction. Take a ruler and measure your own to get an idea. It's 6 inches diagonally.

wp_ss_20141110_0003.png

Turn it sideways known as landscape:

wp_ss_20141110_0001.png

Then there's pinch zoom in case one needs it:

wp_ss_20141110_0002.png

Larger.....

wp_ss_20141110_0004.png

Are you able to follow, Walt, or am I going too fast? ;)

I saved those screenshots on my phone, connected it to my 8.1 tower, which opens the Windows phone app automatically, and that automatically downloads any recent pics to a folder in my pics folder. If I had Bluetooth on my tower I wouldn’t have to USB it.

Smart phones/phablets are actually mobile computers, Walt. They are no longer just dumb radios. They can:

Go anywhere in a pocket or purse.

Keeps accurate time.

Single or group > type or speak text.

Keep/add/delete entries in the Calendar app which alerts me of appointment or events such as Bdays and anniveraries.

Make single or conference phone calls without or with Bluetooth via earpiece or car radio, especially while driving.

Keep a much more detailed call log of which one can add the number to an existing or make new contact.

Keep a detailed contacts list via Contacts app.

Receive/open/send emails.

Maps and navigation.

Check the current weather, which alerts me of dangerous weather such as T-storms, flash floods, tornado warnings, or snow storms native to our area.

Get other alerts such as amber, news, sports, national bombing attack, etc.

Apps work in conjunction of one another.

Browser to access the Net.

Office suite/OneNote.

Scientific programmable calculator.

Camera and storing photos.

Video cam w/ sound.

Sound recording.

Watch TV/movies/videos.

Play games.

Then there’s Cortana, which what she/it can do would make this list double the size.

Most all of this synchs via services.

Basically, Walt, it can do anything your almighty tower PC can do and more as the list reveals. It can go anywhere > All for $40/mo. That’s not a value? Who’s confused about what?

I could and have, but won't post all this using my “dumb phone”. Copy/paste to forum text box from Word and upload screenshots. Performed it many a time.

You had better not post that you have a 7 to 12 inch tablet, for we’ll be all over you about it. If or when someone gifts you a “dumb phone” you can purchase accessories like this stand fitting for your style as seen below. Happy computing no matter what you use. :)

I saved those screenshots on my phone, connected it to my 8.1 tower, which opens the Windows phone app automatically, and that automatically downloads any recent pics to a folder in my pics folder. If I had Bluetooth on my tower I wouldn’t have to USB it.

Most all of this synchs via services.

You don't have to connect the lumia to PC if Sync is turned on for OneDrive too ;) Everything will be saved to the cloud:)

Thanks, Visruth. Yes, used to, but I don't use the auto upload to OneDrive for photos. Other files I do. It was too time consuming sorting through ill-taken/unwanted photos and/or screenshots in OneDrive. Deleting on the camera doesn't necessarily delete it on OneDrive. I'm also on a limited data plan, so I don't want to use that up with unwanted files. Therefore I'd rather review them, then upload to OneDrive to share with others. I also back up files and photos on a backup drive, so I'm in the PC anyway. There I have unlimited data.
