My screen is black all the time

My screen is black all the time in spite of setting and saving a nice slide show under Personification. Done everything I can think of. This is on a W8.1 OS.

It's been activated. CP........ System says so,

Somewhere, I read or saw something that made me think I had a "lock screen". I'm not sure of it's purpose or how to check. How do I confirm that I am in that mode and how to turn on or off?

Only the background is black, the icons are visible and the computer works OK as is.
