My first days with a Windows 8 phone

Thanks for adding this useful info. I am not so sure about Waze. The user comments were not encouraging. And you probably need a data connection other than only WiFi.

Thanks Tepid, I appreciate it. I added the maps of the states where I will need them mostly. Next, I will figure out how to use them. I also have the file manager WHS suggested. It really helps a lot. Trust me, this is all quite new to me. It will just take some time to get used to, but I'll catch on. Thanks for everyone's help.

Yes, I believe you do need a data connection. Not sure though.
I edited my info about Waze as I am still looking at it.
It has it's issues, but it may improve over time. We'll see.

I would always fall back on Here Drive+ though.

haha,, Wait till April 2 and WP8.1
There are a lot of changes coming. Good ones though.

Steve, you and I will probably get all messed up on April 2. LOL

Regarding the maps. There is really nothing to do with them. Their main purpose is to be able to navigate when you are away from the WiFi. It's really neat - you can set a new destinaltion in the plain boonies only with GPS and the maps. If you would not have the maps, the GPS would quickly be lost.

At home, of course, you can go anywhere. The maps work via the internet. I make trip plans in Europe from here in Florida - but that on my 22" screen.

Found the original Bing Maps app that was removed by Nokia
This is the original App Icon access to Bing Maps in WP7

Maybe you will find it useful?
Maps | Windows Phone Apps+Games Store (United States)

This is not a full app install. Just the App part of what was removed by Nokia.
It's the same access you will find under Local Scout when you click the map at the top.

That is the official MS Bing Windows Phone Maps App since WP7
I used to use it all the time on my old phone.
It still works very well. I say try it out and see if you like it.
I just discovered it last night. I can't remember how much it talks, sorry.

If I remember correctly they changed MS maps to Bing maps now, yes? I've been using MS/Bing maps for quite a long time now. Always liked them. I've got to give credit to Google maps, but Bing maps are just as good. Watch out for iMaps, though. You might fall off the edge of the Earth. :D

I can't type posts in 8 forums on my Lumia 1520 using the browser because my onboard keyboard slides up for a second then disappears. No problems with 9 Forums (or anywhere else), for that's different software. Would someone please test 8F on your Lumia for results?

Yeah, same on my 928. This was an issue a while back that a fix for the phone was put out for.
Long time ago.
But, there may be something with the post box here that WP's or Lumia phones do not like.

But I have had issues in other places like that
Such as Walmart site trying to find locations on their site.
I think it has to be a coding thing for IE version on the phone maybe?
Or the virtual keyboard doesn't know how to handle the coding of the site?
Could also be coding for IE on the phone in general as I have had other issues with drop menus

Could be Flash is being used in some way?

I can only guess. I do not think it is a Phone issue in general as I do not have issues with a lot of sites.

Personally, I blame Chrome.
A lot of devs jumped on the Chrome Wagon, but I think them spinners are coming loose and will be the death of them. :sarc:

Tepid, thanks a lot. I just downloaded the Bing Maps and made a test try. It worked Perfect for me, for a change. Thanks for the link. I believe I am starting to catch on, just very slowly. Thanks to everyone here.

I don't see my response to WHS post from last night where he said he and I may be in trouble on April 2ND. I responded, I don't have to wait, I'm already in trouble. LOL. However, I am having fun with my new toy, and I don't give up easily. I WILL figure it out if I live long enough!

Thanks, Tepid. :thumb: I thought it might of been my phone.

Don't quote me, but I think I remember John complaining that the 7F and 8F forum software company was sold off, outdated, and not very well supported, so I doubt this problem will ever get fixed. :(

OK, I just logged onto eightforums and had no problem signing in. But, responding to posts I couldn't do. The keyboard would just pop up and disappear. I couldn't respond on the Lumia. Darn, I was going to show off, LOL. But, I do have one question. My keyboard in any app is English United States, which I want and everything is in English except the space bar is labeled Puwang. It really is not a problem as I know where the space bar is and it causes me no problem, just wonder why or is it a common acronym that I'm ignorant of. I really don't keep up with all the acronyms and don't know most of them. More of a curiosity question.

EDIT: Darn, Wolfgang, I always though Michelin was a brand of car tires. Shows how much I know.

put up with acronyms new guy?

Thanks WHS, I will give them a try. Honestly I was making a joke. My only experience with the name is the commercial on TV. The Michelin Man? But, I will try their maps next time I buy one.

Their stuff is obviously best for France where I travel most of the time. But other countries are good too, I downloaded their app. It's pretty neat - even for my area here in Florida. Saw a lot of things to visit that I never knew after 16 winters in the area.
