If the only site your connected too is Microsoft it shouldn't be a big deal turning off your anti-virus. 3850 MB is 3.8 GB, you have 858 GB, you have enough space. Have you made recovery media for that PC? If not, now is the time to do it. Before you upgrade. The upgrade to Windows 8.1 has broken the factory recovery feature on some PC's. The recovery partition is still there but the link to it from the hot key gets broken. If that happens and you need to do a factory reset, you'll need the recovery media. Or, you'll be doing a clean install of 8.1 from the link I posted earlier. If you know how, making an image of your current setup would also be a good idea.

If the only site your connected too is Microsoft it shouldn't be a big deal turning off your anti-virus. ok i would not have anyother programs running but are there programs 'running' i can't see should 'disable' ?? i have malware programs but they 'run' only when i activate them (free editions) 3850 MB is 3.8 GB, you have 858 GB, you have enough space. great ! Have you made recovery media for that PC? yes have 'recover ' made per mfg suggestion... If not, now is the time to do it. Before you upgrade. haven't a clue how to make an 'image' (ugh). i'm not sure also if i have all required 'updates' installed that 8.1 would require - what would happen if i start to install it via the 'store' but don't have all required updates because i have some sitting in ''hide'' area.. thanks so much for all your help ! I'm not going to do the upgrade to 8.1 until end of August for personal reasons ...need this computer and don't want to chance any problems that would render it 'sick' between now and end of August. best wishes -

I only mentioned updates because its one of them that enables the store upgrade to 8.1 in the first place. Without that update you never get prompted to upgrade. I personally don't image my system and couldn't recommend anything.

I only mentioned updates because its one of them that enables the store upgrade to 8.1 in the first place. I'm pretty sure one of the 'hidden' updates i choose not to install is the one that allows Windows to do the autoupgrade - i'll check what i have 'hidden' to see if there is one required by the store but only used when i'd click on the Store's update ..meaning it would only install 8.1 when i choose to do it - and not the update that would do it automatically whether i wanted it or not ...not sure if they're one in the same (update) but i'll check anyway.Without that update you never get prompted to upgrade. i understood that the windows 'update' is required . but 'if' i don't have it and the Store update/upgrade to 8.1 starts, would Windows 'do' the needed update and then continue installing 8.1? I personally don't image my system and couldn't recommend anything.
o.k. no big deal...thanks so much again !

haven't a clue how to make an 'image' (ugh)

I use Macrium Reflect to make images.
Google it.

I use the paid version for the boot time recovery environment.
