Mozilla edges closer to replacing Flash with JavaScript

The efforts to remove Adobe as a source of pain for Mozilla and Firefox continue at pace, with the announcement that Shumway has entered the Firefox codebase.

The Shumway experiment intends to replace the omnipresent Flash plugin with a JavaScript renderer for Flash's SWF file format that does not use any platform native code. Should the experiment be successful, it would allow Firefox to dispense with the need for a Flash plugin, which would allow the browser to render Flash content on platforms that Adobe does not support, while at the same time removing a common attack vector via Flash from the browser

Well, basically, chrome uses same adobe's flash player, whereas mozilla is trying to implement their own rendering with javascript. As for now, it doesnt work, and will not work for long time.

That covers the video audio/issues for the flash flv format that gets replaced by the html5 webm format.

Here there's talk about swf and that's is a flash binary/executable if you compile actionscript code.
It's not a video or audio file you see on youtube, it's a program/application by itself that can contain video and audio.

Still, it will take many years (like 10 or more) to completely get rid of adobes flash, because flash is ruling over 50% of the internet, it is getting a little bit better with every release, and there is no competing programs as for now, just a buch of visions like html5 or mozilas shumway, as these things are far away from the level at which flash is now.

Check out the Peacekeeper Browser test for an example:
Peacekeeper - free universal browser test for HTML5 from Futuremark

Very pretty.

I got these scores...

Chrome 30.0 got a score of 3133 HTML5 capabilities of 6/7
Firefox 24.0 got a score of 2198 with HTML5 capabilities 6/7
IE11 in compatibility mode got a score of 481 and HTML capabilities of 1/7
IE11 not in compatibility mode stopped with 4 minutes to go though on "The WebGL in HTML5 allows fullblown 3D graphics within the browser without any addons. The test renders a simple transparent 3D sphere, inside which are six bumbmapped spheres.".

Not sure what that means if anything. IE11 doesn't like HTML5?

Firefox was the only browser I used before Windows 8.1 Preview came out along with Chrome 25 and Google's new Blink engine...

Now I pretty much only use Chrome as my main browser both on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 RTM.

Mozilla is in desperate need of a new lighter weight interface overhaul and a faster browsing engine to boot in order to compete with the likes of Chrome 30 and Internet Explorer 11 on both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 platforms.

:p

I agree but for IE11 didn't complete the test and in compatibility mode had much worse performance than either Firefox or Chrome..

Mind you IE11 is what I generally use - I don't have any issues with it in normal browsing (although I know some do).

You may need to add the site to the "Trusted Zones" and set it to "wide open" to get an accurate result.

I often forget to disable NoScript when I visit that site and as a result many of the tests fail or give poor results.

That worked - just the site doesn't recognise IE11 yet. The test with IE11 completed with "Unknown Unknown" browser score of 2297 and 3/7 tests completed. Seems Chrome works best for this site and certainly the video seemed faster. An interesting test, thanks.

What do you mean "lighter weight interface"? If you're talking about the further dumbing down of the GUI and hiding features/options....no thanks.

As for page rendering, what exactly are you people doing with the split seconds saved while using Chrome over Firefox? Not a browser fanboy here. Use what you like, but I am curious.

Personally, nothing - I use IE11 anyway. I ran these tests out of curiosity. Chrome displayed more of the screens (presumably was more compliant with HTML5 standards although I'm not sure about that) and the video of flying along the river was certainly noticeably smoother.

Firefox start up so slow it's embarrassing to watch on an SSD...and Chrome just seems to load pages a lot faster then Firefox not just a split second depending on the website.

As for Internet Explorer 11 I think it's about the most safest browser right now on Windows 8.1 when ran in Enhanced Protection Mode (64-Bit) or Metro UI apps mode (Sandboxed).

In Firefox's defense some pages loaded in Chrome as not optimally displayed correctly as it is in Firefox and that's why I keep all three browser and switch between them depending on usage but Chrome has become my main browser simply for the speed unless of course I need better security for online purchases (IE or Metro UI) or a website in not displayed correctly (Firefox).

I only use Mozilla based browsers(currently Cyberfox), and I never ever have a problem with them. I've used them since the original Netscape.

Agreed.
Firefox is the only browser (in the "Big Three") that still lets you customise most of your GUI.
Firefox-based browsers like Pale Moon allow customisation too.

I hate the current "no controls, no menus" browser fad/trend.
If you want "Full Screen" viewing, just press "F11" (it works in every browser I've tried and a lot of programs too).

As for page rendering, what exactly are you people doing with the split seconds saved while using Chrome over Firefox? Not a browser fanboy here. Use what you like, but I am curious.

You could use a local site to determine if the problem is a browser rendering issue.
I normally blame network congestion.

Based on the browser lab tests, you shouldn't be able to notice any real difference between any of the "Big Three".

Well, firefox is slow browser and will be forever, but they really should get rid of thousands of bugs... i dumped it because it is time bomb, it will explode anytime and no recover will work, a few newest "stable" versions are just piece of crap.

I see this posted on a regular basis.
Firefox seems to crash non-stop on some machines and runs perfectly on others.

Sometimes add-ons (or Flash) cause weird problems.
Did you try using "FF Safe Mode"?
Firefox - Start Firefox in "Safe Mode" - Windows 7 Help Forums

Sometimes files get corrupted in the FF User Profile.
Creating a new profile fixes that issue.
Firefox - Create and Run Multiple Profiles - Windows 7 Help Forums

Here is another browser test link:
Browsermark 2.0 - Welcome

W8 + FF22 got the highest score on that site.
BrowserMark (2013-10-06).png

I didn't run a "clean" test (i.e. I was using my network for other stuff at the time).
You can see how low my Internet bandwidth is compared to their highest rated OS + Browser combo.
