Helping a friend move to Windows 8. We cannot figure out how to move contacts from Gmail on XP to Gmail on Windows 8. We have Exported to a thumb drive (.wab) and plugged into the Windows 8 computer. Dialog box asked if we wanted to import and we said yes. Going to gmail there is NO contacts list.

What do we need to do to get the contacts transferred to Gmail?

Gmail supports importing contacts from CSV format so you need to export the contacts to a CSV file from XP then from the brower, log into gmail, click on Contacts then click on More->Import then click again on Import and select the CSV file.

Once you have setup the Gmail from Windows 8, the contacts should be there.

If I understand you correctly, this doesn't work because I can't find the word 'Contacts' anywhere in the Windows 8 Gmail account.

The problem was, when using the metro email tile, the Gmail drop-down was not visible. By signing in without using metro the drop-down was visible and when clicking on Contacts the list was already there.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for posting back with your results, Jambe, but I'm a little unclear as to what you mean. Do you mean when you have the Modern/Metro email program open then sign into Gmail online the Gmail drop-down for contacts was not visible? If so, as long as the email app is not open it appears?

We have discovered that when using gmail in a browser the contacts are available but the contacts are not available when using metro.

How can metro be changed to use the same contacts list as when using gmail in the browser?

Yes, using the metro app the drop-down is not available. When signing into gmail in the browser it is. My previous post asks if the app can be edited to bring up gmail the same as when using the browser.

I used to have a Gmail account, but got rid of it. I have Live accounts. Please bear with me for I'm working off of memory here.

If you have not already, you must perform topgundcp's method in post #2. They should appear in your Modern/Metro People app. After that, when you are within the Gmail folder in the Modern/Metro Mail app and want to send an email by pressing + or Ctrl/N keys does the new email appear such as this?

Mail Send To Snip.PNG

If so, if you start typing a name in any of the boxes names should appear to use.

The Modern/Metro apps work in conjunction of one another in this way and other ways. There is really no drop down menu to use or configure.

If you set up Windows 8.1 Metro Mail with a Hotmail/Outlook.com, Gmail, or Exchange Server account, all the contacts belonging to that account have already been imported into Metro People. With Metro apps the Mail, Calendar and People will all work together

You are correct. The contacts from Gmail must be configured to be used in the People app via settings in Charms. I'm remembering now. :)

Just to make sure > You do have Gmail account added to the Mail app, correct?
