Microsoft: You Won’t Need a Clean Install to Move to W8.1

Microsoft will soon launch the new Windows 8.1 Preview, so all customers now running Windows 8 will be allowed to make the move to this version via the Windows Store.

In an interview with TechTarget, Erwin Visser, general manager of the Windows commercial division, explained that users should install Windows 8.1 though the built-in update option and not necessarily by performing a clean install.

That is the question to be answered in 4 days. MS keeps saying you get it through an update from the Store and no mention of a full version ISO. Maybe after it is RTM there will be a full version released to OEM and retail.

OK, most likely I will be using in my main machine as my main OS, just for the fun of it.

Will try to install it as soon as MS releases it at least as beta. There's a lot of them around the net but it usually spells a disaster. I have a nice clean backup of whole system disk, so if anything goes wrong, back it goes. As I don't keep any data on the system disk it will be a cinch to replace.

I'll be installing it as an upgrade.

But, I'll be taking an image first, then I can simply wipe the preview and install the final over a clean image (or not, as the case may be).

I don't anticipate too many problems, the software I run hasn't changed greatly since the original DP, so I know it should work.

The public preview is similar to a beta. Microsoft doesn't use the old beta/RC naming system anymore.

I'll be upgrading my Surface RT but obviously not my work hybrid. If there are any issues on RT it's a simple reset back since I don't have to deal with legacy software.

I did the upgrade on my Samsung series 7 slate. By that I mean the upgrade and not the clean install. I did the clean install on a couple different VMs already. The Samsung slate is my secondary tablet. I still don't have the nerve to put it on my main tablet LOL! So far I have to say I am impressed. Believe it or not I have it set up so that I have to jump through hoops to see the tile view of the start screen. I have it set to boot directly to the desktop, I have to click the home button I go to the apps view of the start screen and not to the tiles.

Desktop users, believe it or not you could use this without the traditional start menu and it really isn't that bad. Just use the apps view as your start menu. It is set using the navigation tab of the taskbar properties. That's said I still have the Start8 menu installed and still use it, but I just want everyone to know that it isn't really necessary. In fact it compares favorably with the Mac's Launchpad...

Download Windows 8.1 Preview - Microsoft Windows
Select the "get the update" button, and install the KB.
Then It will show in the store.

Also this will not work with Volume License and Enterprise editions, in that case you have to use the .iso

i went to that page and if you have windows 8 (not rt) which i have, you need to get it as an iso
I do not want it as an iso, i want it from the store
