Microsoft to Fix Blurry Text Bug in Windows 8.1 RTM – Rumo

Windows 8.1 is expected to reach the RTM development stage sometime this month, while general availability is likely to be announced in the coming weeks.

While details on the RTM version are still vague right now, a new rumor spotted on MDL forums indicates that Microsoft might use this build to roll out some essential improvements, including an eagerly-awaited fix for the infamous blurry text bug spotted in both Windows 8 and 8.1.

I am still seeing the blurry text, since upgrading to 8.1. FF is my daily browser (sometimes IE), but both look awful! I can Ctrl+ to up the size and sometimes makes it readable, but not always (and a PITA!) and not for long.

I tried updating vid drivers, says they're the latest already. Then I noticed my AMD Catalyst Control has disappeared from my tray. I tried reinstalling it, gives me a fail on one part. I went to AMDs site and downloaded again, only to find it tells me what I have it already correct/the same.

Clear Type does nothing to fix (numerous times), and checking the box for Let me choose one scaling for displays...does nothing (it wasn't checked before, and don't know if 8.1 unchecked it, or it never was checked).

This makes my daily laptop almost unusable with all the blur...WHY did this happen with a simple upgrade?

I've been mostly using my 8YO desktop that still (luckily!) has 7 Pro on it. I have my gamer laptop to upgrade to 8.1, but NO WAY after this!

I'm open to any other suggestions, or if I need to provide more info. Very sad.

I have not seen clear text in IE10 or 11 since the first Windows 8 beta.

However, with Firefox I can get clear text by going to Options > Advanced > General and unchecking "Use hardware acceleration when available".

Hmmm, I can't tell if using Opera and Pale Moon makes a difference, or my eyes are adjusting to the blur.. er, I mean, fonts. :)

so has this issue been fixed? I did a Windows 8.1x64 Pro fresh install and I'm noticing that text in the desktop, start menu, and many applications is not smooth enough.

No it hasn't. As far as I can tell certain combinations of font, magnification and settings just look horrible especially in IE11. I did not have this problem in Windows 7. There are a lot of threads about this and many things you can try - I've done them all. ClearType and IE11 font smoothing has changed in Win 8 and not for the better.

The funny thing is that everything looks absolutely fantastic in Firefox!

It's Gururrrrrr8!
Seems to me that there are a few problems that involve variables that affect systems differently, like the non-sleep issue. http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/28226-windows-8-1-refuses-sleep.html. Reading through that thread and this thread there are variables that are difficult to pinpoint. One solution that works for one may not work for another.

Fortunately and strangely I have no such issue with either on this older Acer. Just lucky I guess. With the font issue I lean more towards the newer monitors and/or drivers. Just a hunch.

Good luck in your endeavor!

I second PSRS's comment, including his observation re Firefox.

Unbelievably, it hasn't been fixed.

The issue is also a major problem in Office 2013. The user interface looks OK, but open an email or a Word document and the text is blurry.

No surprise then, that HP is looking a building its own Linux based operating system.

Yeah, microsoft has "fu***d" themselves in the ass - they are talking about blurry text in older applications, but hey, even we know, that the bug is global windows 8 problem itself, so even such old applications as office 2013 are affected by this bug :)

Ironically, I don't have any blurry text trouble with older applications.

Hard to believe Microsoft can be so stupid that they don't even understand the problem.

I've just downloaded the Avant Browser, which has the rendering engines from IE, Chrome and from Firefox all together in the one browser, so if one page looks odd, you can select from 4 possible views - IE compatibility, IE11 Standard, Chrome and Firefox.

Of course, webpages viewed in both the IE views look blurry to me and the Firefox and Chrome are sharp as knives.

Try it yourself at:

Download - Avant Browser - The full-featured tri-core rendering Avant Browser which supports IE/Firefox/Chrome engines is fast, stable and memory leak free.
