Microsoft says forget windows 8 and 9 they're going to the cloud

Windows and Office continue to be Microsoft’s main cash cows, with a range of additional offerings also qualifying for positions of top earners. There are a range of company divisions pulling in over $1 billion in revenue each year, including Xbox, SQL Server, System Center, Unified Communications, SharePoint, Developer Tools, Dynamics, and Online Advertising. And yet, Microsoft is looking past Windows 8, Windows 9, Office 15 and Office 16, and is revealing that the future will be marked by a technology which is still in its infancy: the Cloud.

“Ladies and gentleman, we're going to a new world. We're going to a world where not only will every device be connected, but every application, and more importantly every person will be connected. We're going to a world where you will live, where how you live and how you work, the lines will be blurred, because lifestyle and work style are becoming more and more connected,” said Kevin Turner, Microsoft Chief Operating Officer.

this looks promising:

And our big bold goal for the next couple of decades is we want to have a continuous cloud service for every person and every business.
That would suggest they are not going to the cloud just yet.

contious cloud service

How can you have continueous cloud service with todays infrastructure, hell they still have people on dial up, no choice?? Personally I think one of the main reasons they are pushing cloud is so that they can stop spending 10mil a year fighting piracy. Think about it, you buy an OS from them and they give it to you and control it from the cloud and no longer have to worry about pirated cd's/dvd's. They are already gearing toward that with the authenication process required to be installed now if you want updates. They are basically telling you that they will have complete control over every app, Just like the futureistic Sci movies of yesterday and today, something that I don't want.

It's okay, we're all gonna die in 2012 anyway. Right? I mean, because that myth is SO true. (sarcasm)
Really, if they're going to cloud technology, why don't they do it already? And decades? In a couple decades there may very well be something beyond cloud.
Personally cloud has always seemed more of a myth than anything else.

They will have to start slow and get the masses convinced it's a good thing.

There are a lot of people not so happy with the Cloud idea, they won't take the chance of losing a large part of thier market share.

Nor I. I have NO interest in cloud-computing. At all.

If MS does go this route, I'll be going open-source.

One thing good about the cloud so far is that most of my settings for Windows 8 are now stored in my MSN account files.

When I installed Windows 8 to my SSD drive after trying it out on a regular hard drive I noticed that most of my personal settings were already done for me. Things like folder options set too single click, task bar auto hide was already set up, My Favorites in IE10 including my frequently visited sites was already there in IE10 without me having to do a thing.

Quite a few other personal settings that I normally had to perform manually were already done for me. This was very convenient to say the least.

What people don't realize is that if your using Windows 8 and you have a Windows Live account you are already using the cloud. Windows 8 will be syncing your settings from your PC to your tablet, pad or phone without you having to do a thing. Now that's a darn good use for the cloud even if you don't use the free storage space.

I see a lot of complaints about the cloud but it has it's purpose and I'm starting to like the idea.

Hi there
I don't think MS can possibly mean The Cloud

Cloud Cuckoo Land more like it.

Some people actually USE computers for quite long periods without even THINKING about having an Internet connection.

There is a time and place for this type of application -- but people don't want or see the need to be "Tethered" to a remote source whenever they need to do anything on a computer.

Online meetings / intra company presentations etc are all fine but a lot of time people are working away on reports / spreadsheets / presentations etc without any need for the Cloud whatsoever.

If you have any stock in MSFT and that's the future they are planning for themselves then GET RID OF IT NOW.

Cheers
jimbo

The Cloud would leave us rural inhabitants without high speed internet in the Rain. It's bad enough already. Having to download software for everything before an App would run would be too painful.

Careful.
That statement suggests that you are a "free-thinking anarchist".
Our corporate masters always know what is best for us. :sarc:

"A fool and his money are soon parted."
The same thing applies to data. ;)

If you have any stock in MSFT and that's the future they are planning for themselves then GET RID OF IT NOW.

The trouble is, there are enough gullible people for it to make "gazillions of dollars" for MS (and others).

It seems that we don't have a choice but to use this so called cloud.

If you are using your Windows Live account then you are also using the cloud,...whether you like it or not .

So far I have to say I like how "the cloud" remembered many of my personal settings, including all of my IE 10 favorites, after I installed Windows 8 to my SSD, a very useful feature of the cloud IMO.

Maybe in America or other advanced countries there are fast and broad lines for cheap prices, but this sounds like science fiction to me when I still have to despair to get decent data connection and navigation from my smartphone when I am out of home, and I have the best phone and an expensive data service, but it is still ridiculously slow and I live in western Europe.

Do these companies believe that the infrastructures are ready for the cloud? And thye believe that people will trust the lines and the privacy? And what about big size files, those which are from some hundred MB to many GB? Some movies in 1080p are up to 20GB. Are you suppoused to store it in the cloud?

I am sure that the cloud and synchronicity are a good idea but still just a complement to the local storage and I can't see how this technology can develop to substitute the traditional one before 10 years at least.

Like Chromebooks... what a wrong idea yet. I wonder how many units has Google sold.
