Microsoft Expected to Release Windows 8.1 ISOs This Month

Microsoft has launched the Windows 8.1 exclusively via the store, with several company officials explaining that no stand-alone ISOs would be released.

Now it turns out that someone in Redmond had a change of heart, as Microsoft might actually launch Windows 8.1 ISOs later this month.

Be careful what utility you use to get the embedded code. A lot of them just read what's stored in the Windows Registry. If you upgrade to Pro or add Media Center all you get back is the Pro or Media center key not the embedded key.

Hopefully they have realized that not everybody can update to 8.1 though the store. And even if they can having install media to recover from a failed update is something some will need. Who knows, maybe they are just waiving a white flag after noticing all the downloads though the work around posted in the other thread. Either way if they do offer up the ISO's and make them easy to get it will be a good thing.

I'm not holding my breath. Anticipating Windows 9.0 I went ahead and purchased a full version of windows 8.1 from the Microsoft web site. No need to spend a whole day restoring oem media and updates, just to be able to upgrade thru the store, or with an iso. Hopefully the upgrade from 8.1 to 9 should be an iso and cheaper, for me anyway.

If you have upgraded to the 8.1 Preview from a retail windows 8, you should be able to activate your upgrade free to 8.1 using your Windows 8 key. If you have not purchased Windows 8/8.1 in any form, you will not be able to activate it until you purchase a valid qualifying product with a new key.

It likely all hinged on Microsoft selling them the media with no lenience, and that fell though for some reason. Somebody changed their mind, didn't like the deal, who knows. Maybe they didn't get enough pre orders to make them actually want to bother?

why bother selling/paying for 8.1 when 8.2 is around the corner? that could be the reason it was pulled too.
