Metered Internet Connections for Devices - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

Turn On or Off "Download over metered connections" for Devices in Windows 8 and 8.1​

   Information

A metered internet connection is when a service provider charges by the amount of data sent and received by your PC.

This tutorial will show you how to turn metered connections on or off for new devices to be able to download device software (drivers, info, and apps) while you are connected to metered connections in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

If metered internet connections is turned off, then device software will not be downloaded when connected to a metered connection.

OPTION ONE

Turn On or Off Devices Download over Metered Connections in Windows 8

1. Open PC Settings, and click/tap on Devices in the left pane. (see screenshot below step 2)​

2. In the right pane under Metered Internet connections, move the slider right or left to turn it on or off. (see screenshot below)​

NOTE: The default setting is off.​

3. When finished, you can close PC settings if you like.​

OPTION TWO

Turn On or Off Devices Download over Metered Connections in Windows 8.1

1. Open PC Settings, and click/tap on PC & devices on the left side. (see screenshot below)​

2. Click/tap on Devices on the left side of PC & devices. In the right pane scroll down and under Download over metered connections, move the slider right or left to turn it on or off. (see screenshot below)​

NOTE: The default setting is off.​

3. When finished, you can close PC settings if you like.​

I don't understand it says if you turn it off it will decrease the net usage so why would it help if I turn it on

The setting is to "download over metered connections". Turning it off, will have devices not download when you are on a metered connection.
