A metered connection is when your internet service provider charges by the amount of data sent and received by your PC.

OneDrive is a cloud-based storage service where you can view, browse, upload, and share the files you saved online to OneDrive.com.


This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off OneDrive to upload and download files over metered connections even when roaming in your account Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1.





OPTION ONE
Turn On/Off OneDrive Usage Over Metered Connections in PC settings

1. Open PC settings, and click/tap on OneDrive on the left side. (see screenshot below)​

2. Click/tap on Metered connections on the left side of "OneDrive", and do step 3 or 4 below for what you would like to do. (see screenshot below)​

3. Turn On or Off OneDrive Usage Over Metered Connections
A) On the right side under the Use OneDrive over metered connections section, move the "Upload and download files over metered connections" slider to the left (off) or right (on) for what you want. (see screenshot below step 2)​
4. Turn On or Off OneDrive Usage Over Metered Connections when Roaming
NOTE: This option will be grayed out and unavailable if you turned off step 3 above.​
A) On the right side under the Use OneDrive over metered connections section, move the "Upload and download files over metered connections even when I'm roaming" slider to the left (off) or right (on) for what you want. (see screenshot below step 2)​
5. When finished, you can close PC settings if you like.​





OPTION TWO
Turn On/Off OneDrive Usage Over Metered Connections using REG File


Note   Note
The .reg files below are for the registry key and value below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SkyDrive\Controller

SyncOnMeteredNetwork DWORD

0 = Turn off
1 = Turn on
2 = Turn on when roaming


1. Do step 2, 3, or 4 below for what you would like to do.​
2. To Turn On OneDrive Usage Over Metered Connections
NOTE: This is the default setting.​
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.​

3. To Turn On OneDrive Usage Over Metered Connections when Roaming
NOTE: This steps turns on both steps 2 an 3.​
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.​
Turn_On_Use_OneDrive_Over_Metered_Connections_Roaming.reg
download
4. To Turn Off OneDrive Usage Over Metered Connections
NOTE: This steps turns off both steps 2 an 3.​
A) Click on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.​
Turn_Off_Use_OneDrive_Over_Metered_Connections.reg
download
5. Save the .reg file to your desktop.​
6. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to Merge it.​
7. If prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.​
8. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.​
