Two days ago I used my laptop to power a device via a usb connection. After I removed the usb cable the keyboard starting malfunctioning. When pressing the keys some would not type at all, some would type the wrong character, and some after pressing the key just once would type multiple wrong characters, not allowing me to backspace to delete them.
I did both a system restore and when that did not solve the problem I reset my laptop to factory settings and still have the problem. I also went in thru device manager to uninstall/update the keyboard settings but it didn't help. Since the problem started I keep getting CPU usage warnings. The keyboard issue began just after plugging in and removing the usb device and I think the problem lies there but I don't know what else to try. I have used a newer laptop to power the same usb device with no problems. In the recent past I was able to import photos from my sony camera to it via usb cable with no malfunction. The afflicted laptop is a Toshiba satellite L75-B7270 (2013), os windows 8.1. This is the first operational problem I have had with this laptop, although lately I have noticed a vague unspecified "clunkiness" to it. Toshiba support has an online pc troubleshooter scanning option but I am unable to access it due to the keyboard problem.
If anybody has any suggestions please let me know. I don't have much tech experience and my attempts above were done by merely entering questions in a search box. Even though the computer has not been used hard I don't want to spend money fixing it since it is 7 years old. Thank you all!
