Hello,
Windows 8.1/from org.8.0

Just a Question to some long timers here.
I have A toshiba Sat-Notebook(2013)
After climbing back up from a reset from disk(s)
to original 8.0(from 8.1) back to current 8.1 (also current win updated)
and all drivers installed (WLAN-Display-audio etc.)
keyboard seems to not want to have the num Lock enable at start.
This was working fine up until this Reset.
Any Ideas? I am at work right now , but I will check manufactuerers FAQ's & KB
when back at home.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

That problem should have been fixed with the updates. You had to do a Registry edit when 8 first came out, to keep Num Lock on.

Hard time finding correct Function key F2 @ Logo screen no go.
I am going to do a little research to locate the correct F Key.
Might be 1. Will repost when I locate it. Thanks for the Advise so far. :)

Well i was able to load the bios( DA me was tapping F2). It was a hold.
There is no option under Advanced>system Config
to either toggle off or even set
Bios vr. was 6.0 and was flashed to 6.5 some time ago.
I will have to download Toshiba's System Settings tool to see if
I can locate it there.
Will update when I find something.
:(
I have the System Settings tool, not there either.
I guess I have to dig in and try to locate information.
Not that this is a big issue, just tapping the num key
no problem, but it gets my goat. :P

Either Fn F2 or F2 should bring up the bios screen. Not all units use the same sequence to get into the bios.

For some reason if you have Fast Startup/Hybrid Shutdown enabled. There is of course one of Microsoft's coding bugs that causes this. This has the Registry fix.

Enable Num Lock on startup or reboot in Windows 8 / 7

I was wondering why the startup behavior of Numlock stabalized on my Laptop. I switched off fast booting.

Second option worked:
I tried both and the outcome was good,

Enable Num Lock on startup or reboot in Windows 8 / 7

  • Press Win + R and type in Regedit
  • Navigate to registry key HKEY_USERS\Default\Control Panel\Keyboard
  • Right click on the “InitialKeyboardIndicators”, select Modify and change Value data to 2.
  • Exit Registry.
Note: I also completed first option did not work. As well I did not chage it back to the default just went with the second option,
I did thought change the default option of- 2147483648 and modified it to (2) rebooted it seemed to not work at logo screen
but then appeared right before log in.

Thanks for this regedit, Was a little frustrating but delt with it so Cheers!! :) broe23 :P for the Fix :P
Marked as resolved... Hope it's stable lol

That was one of the first things I dealt with, when we got my son his Toshiba Laptop a couple of years ago. I always disable Hibernate on machines, because of the problems with it on 7, from not being 100% compatible with all mfg machines.

Didn't seem to do this on my daughter's Toshiba. .. hhmmm

Is fast boot disabled? Also on that long digital number I seem to remember one of the posters on the page saying it was bit fields. To set the bit for '2' change the last 2 digits from 48 to 50 as in 2147483650

If you just set it to '2' then you are disabling all the other settings for all those bit fields(whatever they are.) MS Registry has a lot of "magic numbers." There is next to no documentation.

Hello MilesAhead,

Yes fast Start up is currently turned off. I am investigating the article now about the change (48 50).

Yes I see this from Ken,
"I just got off a chat session with HP Support - I'd reported the NUMLOCK off problem (off at start and restart). My original HKEY_USERS\Default\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators value was "2147483648" (Windows 8.1, 64 bit)
HP Support had me change that value to "2147483650" - and it worked. My NUMLOCK is now ON at start/restart. Problem resolved."

and also below post for an assus whitch it does not work for, might not of been done properly who knows, but his default returned to (2) after making the change from (48) to (50)

Wil further investigate, but for now it is working. Have not located any other Dis functionality via key board.
