I have windows 8.1 and am trying to do a refresh as I've had some problems. But I keep getting a message that says, "The drive where windows are installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I then did a scan using "SFC/SCANNOW" When it was finished it said that it found some corrupt files but could not fix some of them. So the question is: What is a locked drive and how do you unlock it? Thanks
Frank

This is what I got:
Current read only : No
Read Only: No
Boot disk: yes
Hibernation disk: No

I'm wondering if my drive is bad because I get all kinds of errors. As an example one time when I tried to do a refresh, it told me to put in the media, so I put in the CD with windows 8 and a message said, "Invalid media." I then decided to recover a system image that I made in July. When asked which image I wanted to restore, I chose the one I made in July. Actually it was the last one that I made. But it restored to an image that was supposed to have been made yesterday. I did not make one yesterday. I tried it again and I chose the one I made in July but it still wanted to restore from the previous day. I'm also having a problem with internet explorer shutting down. So there have been all kinds of errors. It makes me wonder if I am in need of a new computer.

If you go to the drive manufacturers web site you should be able to find a free utility to check the drive for errors. You can also try this, http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6221-chkdsk-check-drive-errors-windows-8-a.html?filter
I did a drive check last night. It took about 4 hours but everything passed. So what I did was to restore it to the original factory settings. So it now has windows 7. So far everything seems to work just fine. I'm now going to install 8. I'll post back to let you know how it goes.
