I have absolutely no bloody idea...
alright, can someone tell me all the possible ways to adjust one's screen brightness within windows 8 on a laptop?

for some odd reason the laptop only adjusts the brightness when on the battery and it does that intelligent adjustment crap(tried to find a more polite word....failed).

WinKey+I and then in the lower right near the power button is the brightness adjustment.

Most laptops have function keys to adjust brightness as well, but you usually have to install a driver.

Check your power management settings in the control panel. The default settings for a laptop will regulate the display brightness when running on battery. Not sure what laptop you have, but it might also have an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness depending upon that, too. When the AC is hooked up, the power management software lets the display be brighter. But all that should be configurable in the control panel.

LOL yeah, that autodimming is annoying when watching a movie. I had that happen to me with my daughter's Macbook Pro.

As far as the auto dimming via the ambient light sensor, you could try checking display driver settings. There should be some setting that tells it whether to auto-adjust. Mine doesn't have that feature, so unfortunately I can't check on my laptop. Mine only adjust based upon whether I'm on battery or AC, which is in the power management settings.

From your original question, you asked how to adjust the brightness. I told you how to do that.

From your other comment, it seems you don't want to know how to adjust the brightness after all, you just want to disable adaptive brightness. Go into your power profile settings, and one of them is "Enable adaptive brightness", so turn that off.

its both, as I suspect I have something of a problem that i'm trying to learn to troubleshoot on my own. I cant always call tech support, so it would behoove me to know how to do it myself.

Hello, try going to control panel > (system and security) power options > change plan settings > change advanced power settings and you should see 'Enable adaptive brightness' (see picture). If not there, Sony may have made it's own plan, try another plan (Balanced).

nope, no adaptive brightness and I'm currently on the balanced plan.

now I need to hunt down the settings that dim my display when on battery, I want to turn that off.

Strange. I've got 3 w7\w8 laptops here with no implementation for screen luminosity relative to ambient light, but all offers to turn it on or off in power settings ! Your laptop does control luminosity, yet seemingly gives you no options to turn in on or off.
It's probably available in some specific Sony app, maybe Vaio Control Centre ?
Also try a Sony forum > Sony: Community: Forum
Good luck.

well... its not interfering with what I'm doing, so unless it starts doing something unexpected like dimming my screen to say 40% then I dont think I need to worry, I just wanted to know if I could stop that..

*facepalms* you know, I did just test this machine on battery, with ironman 2008 in the dvd drive and I didnt notice anything..irritating. maybe I'm just borrowing trouble here where there doesnt need to be any?

edit:

update:
alright, just checked sony support, I've got the most current drivers for my hardware.

unless it starts acting squirrely I'm gonna let it be.
