Latest Intel HD Graphics Driver for Windows 8

It is a strange problem, and it has worried me a little the comments I made, and would like to apologise. Something is obviously blocking the driver installation - smart screen unlikely - your antivirus program I don't think so either - you could run this scan it wont do any damage - right click command prompt and select run as an administrator then type this in and press enter : sfc /verifyonly. Have you tried installing another driver to see if it will install eg the latest NVidia driver Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

No need to apologize fellow, you haven't done anything wrong. I have installed the Nvidia Driver for my GTX 870m successfully sometime back, which is why i'm so concerned about not being able to install 'any' drivers for my Intel HD 4600. It's either those drivers are completely incompatible with my currently installed drivers, or something became corrupted.

I really hope Intel manufactures a fix soon, 'maintenance day' is coming up for my laptop, and i'd like to have everything installed before then.

Have you tried the driver from the Asus support site - to see if that works - sounds more like corruption, but I would try that firstly -
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download G750JS

To fix corruption if its found use this - sfc /scannow with admin privileges also (how to from my last post)- just to have a scan use the verifyonly.

Another solution might be to uninstall your NVidia driver, as it may have corrupted the install somehow, and then try to install the intel 4600 graphics driver firstly, then reinstall the NVidia driver. If this were the case, and you have further problems I would get onto Asus to fix it. Firstly you would have to disable windows update driver installation - in search (Windows LOGO + S) type - "Change device installation settings", so it doesn't reload the same driver before you get a chance to install the intel driver. If it still loads the driver against instructions go into device manager and uninstall the driver there - if it prompts to delete the current driver select that option - it will still let you reinstall it later. When the machine reboots it will load the default display driver which means your screen size will be all out of plumb, so go into display settings and give it a higher resolution temporarily if necessary.
If that is too much do a system restore around the Nvidia driver installation and install it again after you install the intel driver Or just simply reinstall the NVidia driver - select custom install - select clean install - if and only if you didn't select do a clean install when you firstly installed the Nvidia driver (make sure its a WHQL). This may not work so if that were the case try some of those previous ideas.

I installed the driver from the Asus G70JS driver download section a day ago, it installed fine, but I believe it's a driver that already came pre-installed on my laptop, so no real improvement there. The Nvidia and Intel drivers are working fine, but any drivers from the intel site will not install at all.

I'm guessing I have to rely on the drivers provided by my manufacturer?

Unfortunately, the driver that's only provided by Nvidia at the moment is the BETA driver. It works fine.

Yes you have it there its more likely the beta driver and they do warn you about beta drivers and to backup your system before installing them - its a shame if that has caused the problem - I wouldn't be able to hack it for too long and would reinstall the OS if i couldnt find a solution. Windows 8.1 provides good backup options and recovery options eg refresh and reset would fix the problem and you can also create a system image which restores your system back to the date you create it with everything exactly the same - that means you only need to update a few things, but its too late for that in your case I guess, but they do have tutorials on this site for refreshing or resetting the OS - unfortunately after its completed you would have to install all the drivers, and all the updates, plus anything else - the refresh keeps your settings, and that's all, the reset keeps nothing, and is the same as a clean install, or works out that way if its successful.

Would anything be fixed if I just waited for a WHQL driver to be released, and have that driver overwrite my BETA driver, or is the damage irreversible at this point?

You could have a go at it now - download the latest WHQL Driver from Nvidia 335.23, and do a custom install - check the clean install box, but if you wait a couple of weeks or less, as its pretty well due any day now, then try the latest WHQL driver. When you do try it if the above fails system restore firstly around the beta driver - there should be an automatic restore point created (select the show all restore points box), if it fails it will return your OS back to the way it currently is so don't worry - this would have a better chance of fixing it so it would be worth it. It shouldn't be a problem running the 335.23 driver, but if you would prefer to keep the current driver, and the worry just be patient.

I would also suggest creating another thread in drivers, as someone else with more knowledge and experience might know how to fix this problem.
You could try the locate the .inf file install just follow the instructions: You cannot install a device driver by using its installation program in Windows Vista
you might need to download a utility to unzip it correctly eg. 7zip
