Laptop won't connect to Samsung Galaxy S5 hotspot

My Acer Aspire V5 laptop with Windows 8.1 will not connect to the wifi hotspot of my Samsung Galaxy S5 for some reason. The laptop connected to my previous Galaxy S3 phone, and connects to my home wifi modem no problem. It recognises the phone in the Network list (when you click on the 5 bars icon on the bottom bar next to the volume control), shows full signal but will not connect to it. In Control Panel/Network and Sharing Centre the only "active network" listed is the home wifi modem.

Yes I have seen the similar post replies from 2013 but the suggestions given either don't work on my laptop or don't make sense to me. Any ideas? (please keep the jargon to a minimum, my computer knowledge is limited)

Did you check with your Cellular carrier if they allow you to use Tethering?

Yes as I said my previous S3 connected no problem.

try to set totally different network name on your phone from any that you had so far, and dont set the password - leave the network opened.
then try to connect.
could be that you already have saved network on your laptop, but with diff pw, or that it doesnt recognize the type of security

if it doesnt help, try to temporarily disable firewall and antivirus on your laptop, though they should allow you to connect, at least limited, but then wouldnt allow traffic to pass. but try it anyway

that doesnt matter at all, hes connecting via wifi, the phone processes mobile networking

Yea, one has nothing to do with the other, Wifi is Wifi, that is what you are connecting your laptop to the phone with.
Maybe something with security settings? Try setting everything up from scratch on the phone and leave it open security or try different security protocols to see if it works.

A friend with a laptop/tablet to see if it connects to the phone? Has been a week, maybe he fixed it.

windows updates. With the Toshiba laptop google android device manager found my phone easily. Now on this laptop
it will not acknowledge the device. So it downloaded onto my computer, so it is on my list of devices, but keeps saying
device not found. What do you think?

First thing, this is the wrong section of forum, as i understood you connect your device via usb cable, it has nothing to do with networking.
So try to ask this and look under drivers and hardware subsection.

And second, self-explanatory, this is driver issue prolly, search forum under earlier mentioned section, and you will prolly find your answer.
