Laptop Performance Issue Windows 8.1

Hi,

I have a HP Pavillion G6-2295sa, I have installed Windows 8.1 and around after a week it gets all sluggish.

Specs:

Microprocessor	2.4 GHz Intel Core i3-3110M
Chipset	Intel HM76 Express
Microprocessor Cache	3 MB L3 cache
Memory	8 GB DDR3
Memory Max	Upgradeable to 8 GB DDR3 (2 DIMM)
Video Graphics	Intel HD Graphics 4000 (up to 1.65 GB)
Hard Drive	1 TB SATA (5400 rpm) Up to 24 GB partition for system recovery

After about a week it gets really slow, I do regular maintenance, I play a few games. Could anyone tell me what could possibly make it so slow after such a short period of time. It does not get hot.

Not really from those stats. What programs are you using when it starts feeling like the OS is getting "sluggish"? Are you using a faster machine at work or school?

Should run a chkdsk after installing OS. What came on this laptop ? Say maintenance mean defrag too?

elevated command prompt, type chkdsk c: /f /r

Open task manager and check to see what is starting up when the PC boots and is still running afterwards.
Primary cause of slow PC too many running applications, look in notification area, try to stop startups and some running processes that are not required to run at startup.

Yes I mean defrag too, I do only run anti-virus, dropbox and a few others at startup nothing heavy but Applications seems to open slow I get little laggs. Im still thinking off of those specs it shouldnt be that slow.

@Broe23 I do use a faster desktop but it doesn't matter because I know that my laptop should run and open apps up alot faster than it does.

True your specs should be able to handle Windows 8.1, try running chkdsk .

Check how much memory being used in task manager when nothing else is running on desktop.
You say ones you have running are not using a lot of memory ? Your sure. Some processes are running in services.msc too.
1TB drive is good, although only 5400RPM. How full is it ? Scan for viruses lately ?

Yes I've scanned for viruses. I mean I guess I could stop unused services and such free up some memory

Be careful which ones you either disable or set to manual, research it first, in most cases it can be done within the software itself.
I was primarily concerned with start up process.

Ok I've just installed a fresh copy of Windows 8. Currently in task manager its using these resources with nothing installed and IE running:

CPU: 20% - 25%
Ram: 25% = 2GB out of 8GB
Disk: 40% - 50%

And that's with only IE running So Imagine if I had things running my disk would be going crazy on me. Is that bad or average?

Also is IE worth staying with or should I change to firefox or Chrome?

Some anti-virus programs can really rob system resources and slow your computer down. Windows Defender takes less system resources than most anti-virus programs.

Wow, reinstalled Windows 8 ? 2GB RAM used on just being on desktop with IE seems like a kind of a lot. i have more running and now using Firefox in task manager my memory is 1.6 % 0% on disk and 2% on CPU.

Can not get rid of IE, only disable it, using firefox is to no advantage in memory use then using IE. True like said an Anti-Virus can use resources, this is mattering to which you are using. Plus when it is scanning.

Need to go back and take a look at what is running again, even show this in first tab of task manager, then go to the start up tab.
Said try also a chkdsk.

Ok With just 1 tab in firefox running and taskmanager I am using, 1.2GB Ram, 0% CPU, 0% Disk.

I haven't got any AV and as for startup programs I disabled all.

I ran a chkdsk but I don't know if it had any errors is there any way to check.

O.k. seems better, but may be some startups you need, have to figure which are good to have and which are not, sometimes there needed. Here is a way to get chkdsk results, post it here.

1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, type powershell.exe, and press Enter.

2. In PowerShell, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter.

get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt

3. You will now have a CHKDSKResults.txt file created on your desktop that is the log file of your chkdsk scan results from Event Viewer.
