I started working in the tool-room running an engine lathe for General Electric in 1953. When I started they gave me a little slip of paper that showed my starting pay. It shows my starting rate as $1.64 per hour. That was in February of 1953. I must have done a good job because in October I got a 14 cents per hour raise. I still have all the slips up until October 1976 when I was earning $6.27 per hour.

I didn't keep pay slips, but I started on £3.50 a week when I was 15 in 1958, not that I kept much it had to be handed over to the parents.

Joan--You're post about handing your pay to your parents brings back memories. My first full time job was in March 1947 that was when I turned 16 years old and It's the day I quit school. (Quitting school was a mistake but that's another story). My first check was for $33.00. I cashed the check, gave my mom the $33.00, she kept 33 and gave me back 3. I had no problem with that because I felt it was expected of me. In my generation and the way I was brought up, that was the thing to do. I don't remember how long it went like that, but if I remember correctly, at age 18 I just paid a small amount. It was a little bit like paying room and board. But if I would have moved out on my own, it certainly would have cost me more than that small amount.

I agree with your bit about leaving school I wanted to stay on for the extra year to continue with the shorthand and typing I had started in my final year. Wasn't possible, as far as my parents were concerned I had to leave at 15 and start work to pay for my board and lodging, our neighbour had got me a job in the local factory that made baby dresses and rompers plus ladies overalls.

My memory is not that good but I think it was £3.50 I got a week, it might have been less and it was in pounds, shillings and pence, before things went decimal.

I don't remember what I got back for pocket money but it stopped when I left home aged 17. As you say in those days it was the done thing to hand over your wages to your parents and you didn't complain because it was the normal thing to do. :)

Joan--In spite of that we all survived, didn't we.:) When I happen to mention that to the younger generation these days, they are all shocked. Most can't imagine giving some of their earnings to help support the family.

I agree, in a lot of cases it's all self. Getting back to the subject I remembered I have a pair of sandals that I bring out to wear every summer and I've had those for well over 20 years. I'm not one of those shoe hoarders, I have those sandals a pair of slip on shoes, a pair of trainers and my slippers and that's it for footwear. ;)

Windows 7 has gone to the local junk yard. Don't want to keep it.
It's old stuff to me. Got tossed out with XP, Vista, Ubuntu, and Suse.
