Hi Guys, My name is Bram and i'm new on this forum!

Normally i'm very handy at these things but I can't get around this.

Let me exlpain you guys my network setup.

I own a modem from my provider (Ziggo NL) with my own router (D-Link DIR-868L/E ) which works perfectly on my tablet, phone, laptop etc. On the second froor I have a TP-Link C7 archer in WDS mode ( wireless connected to my D link downstairs) as I don't have any wire running from downstairs to the second floor. This setup works prefectly on 2.4Ghz as for 5Ghz on my wireless devices but when I hook a cable from my TP-LInk (upstairs) to my desktop my connection is very unstable. The speeds are amazing though. around 85Mbps for down and 8 for up which is what I pay for but the connection drops continuesly. I Think it may be with the DNS server. I tried (openDNS) or something and now I have the DNS of google which is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Still after like a hour the problem returns. My wireless devices still have no problem. I tried different ports on my TP-link and I tried a cat 5e and cat 6 cable. no difference. My TP-link gets a good reception from the D-link because all my other devices have no problems what so ever. Do I miss something?

Thanks!

Bram

Welcome to the forum!

Don't know if it will help your situation but there is firmware dated September. Have you updated it?

Hi Popeye, Thanks for the response! Do you mean the firmware of the router? if so, which one or do you mean my motherboard?

Yes that's the one. I haven't updated it yet. Could be the cullpit indeed. I do hope That my settings keep the way they are.. Thanks !

Hi popeye, I just flashed my router. I'm very curious as I had to set every setting again to my desire, but It all works again. Thanks for the tip! I indeed saw that there was a improvement fix for the WDS bridging so i'm curious if the network would consist longer then a hour straight.. I keep you updated!

What I read quickly said that settings would not be saved and saved config files would not work either. :(

Please let us know if it fixed the problem.

It happened again.. It's only my pc connected with lan cable. My phone still works on both 2.4 as 5Ghz network.. I doubt it's something in the settings on the router as the wireless devices have no problems whatsoever. I have to say when I add my dongle to my pc to add wi-fi It struggles but it does it's job.. just takes it's time to connect.

What adapter do you have in the PC? I have Atheros and in Device Manager I have these settings:

Also, don't know if you have this on a desktop computer but check if there is a Link State Power Management option in Advanced Power options:

Yes everything is up-to-date. I have to say for a hour now network hasn't dropped out. Looks good now, You'll get a response tomorrow how it turned out in the end! thanks a lot for your help. pretty obvious things I didn't think about ! :)

My pc runs fine now but now it's the wireless that doesn't work like it should do. It's only on my TP-link. I get the error DNS_PROBE_NO_INTERNET. That was also the problem on my desktop but I flushed my DNS and added some DNS from OPENDNS in my network adapter and that seemed to work.. but I don't see why this should be such a pain in the butt. I'm a network administrator myself but this is to strange for even me to handle..

Hi Bram
I am also having trouble with W8.1 on a laptop over wireless.
Periodically losing DNS function.
Wireshark shows DNS query going out and reply containing correct IP address coming back into laptop from DNS resolver.
But the laptop DNS client does not seem to be able to use the returned IP address until I run ipconfig /flushdns
Then it works for a while & stops again...
Does this match your symptoms?
regards
Alan

I Think I will just swap the TP-link router for a Linksys WUMC710. I think the TP-link just doesn't do it's job well enough.. Keep losing connection, can't handle the DNS or whatever.. I'll get that linksys one Thuesday so I have to sit it out till then, Hopefully when I get that one all problems will be over :):)

anyway, Thanks for the help on the forum! appreciate it!

Good luck with that Bram
Let us know how it goes.
Unfortunately, mine seems to be the way the OS manages the DNS cache & new DNS look-ups.
Hoping someone out there will have a registry hack or tweak...
regards

I now have a linksys media bridge installed and everything works like a charm!in IPconfig i finally have a DNS Suffix again and my speed now is 90 down 8 up so that's good enough for me :) not really solved actually, but just gave up lol. thanks guys for the help!
