My system is up to date but
this update showed up today on my 8.1 system, out of the blue,
and has shown up as an "important update".

It seems to be from 2016, and is apparently a security update for Secure Boot.

I'm running a legacy Bios/MBR system, and this particular install has been in
place since 9/18.

Any thoughts? For now, I've just ignored it, just letting it sit there.

I installed KB3172729 on a BIOS (non-UEFI) system running Win8.1 and found no problems with it
so it's safe to install. When installing KB3172729 thru windows update it will also silently install the KB3173424 servicing stack update because KB3172729 requires KB3173424

OK thanks for the info. I'll see what happens at the next monthly rollup. The thing that strikes
me as odd is that this update would have surely been incorporated into one of the monthly
rollups long ago. No?

regarding 64bit/x64 KB3172729 for Win8.1, it was no longer offered after Jan. 2021 as the Jan. 2021 KB4535680 security update for Win8.1 x64 replaces it

KB3172729 on 32bit/x86 Win8.x systems, on the other hand, still needs it as KB4535680 is x64/64bit only and is not available for 32bit systems
