Issues with USB Devices

Okay, but I only said it once... you're the person who keeps bringing it up.

But now I am actually genuinely interested in how the interactions occur with USB's at a much lower level than just copying data.

And as far as I am aware, USB data transfer caching is disabled by default.

USB devices are always active when they are connected, pulling them out at any point without safe remove first always carry risks.

Whilst that is true, how long before the USB stops exchanging critical cached data fragments (including headers and sectors)? Surely with the USB power saving modes built into Windows this wouldn't be such an issue?

There's a two-way connection between the USB device and the PC. Safe remove is from the PC, not the USB. The other factor is the file system type on the USB, data security could help prevent USB corruptions.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but how exactly would it affect USB corruptions?

File corruptions that are related to viruses or malwares, NTFS provides security at the file system level.

One thing I noticed in my install of Win8 is that, unlike with Win7, there is no option to safely remove a flash drive. When I click on the green arrow icon, I get the same popup for the device, but it is greyed out. In Win7, I can click the device and safely remove it. So, I have been just pulling out the USB sticks and flash cards -- and so far, this has not posed a problem.

Then something is not right it works okay on my setup
