ISO creation tool--anything better than imgburn?

I've been using imgburn. Seems ok, but everytime I download it I have to be very careful not to download or install other junk.

Is there anything better out there? It doesn't have to be free, but I want something simple, with a small footprint, and no malware, foistware etc.

I could be wrong, but I thought that Windows XP created ISO as an interim step when copying CDs or DVDs...

If there were something that allowed editing ISOs, I would definitely pay for that.

There are several, PowerIso, MagicIso, UltraIso, Gburner .....

Just google the names and take your pick

I think most of them offer to install something - just uny=tick it.

That is because you typically download the free version ( they have to pay for that somehow) , then unlock the pro features with a key.

IMGburn is what I have always used. I don't remember difficulties with extra garbage with IMGBurn.

Pretty much any "free" download has an assortment of junk that they attempt to get you download with it. It's a bit of a toss to sort through the garbage in order get to the actual download that you were looking for as they tend to disguise the actual download in order to get you to click on other stuff that you don't want. Takes a bit of practice to spot the actual download sometimes.

ImgBurn is the best free one around though and most everyone uses it for that reason.

DVD shrink is good for compressing .ISO's and you can also edit to a certain extent and it's also free.

Just found them both "the actual downloads" in under a minute.

How about oscdimg? It's a Microsoft free command line utility. I haven't tried it yet because it requires dowloading the whole friggin Windows Automated Installation Kit.

Has anyone tried oscdimg?

I use mkisofs, too.

You can't mount or edit or burn with them .

They are just for creating .iso files - bootable or not.

Why not use ISOtoUSB?

it is fast creates a bootable USB stick, which is faster then a DVD.
I trew out mine long ago.

All it takes is:

oscdimg -n -d -m "source" "target"

Three files (out of 4263) were skipped though. Not sure why. Maybe hidden.

mkisofs looks good.

I use Infrarecorder but it's pretty basic and only not bootable ISO's are made (manually adding files is the option and maybe some boot files can still be copied).

It has a x64 version also and the installer doesn't install junk. You can even take the zip or the portable version and put in Program Files (manually install).

Keep in mind that it's a burner, makes iso's but it's pretty basic.

I downloaded the full Windows Automated Installation Kit for Windows 7. It seems to have three versions of oscdimg: F1_oscdimg, F2_oscdimg and F3_oscdimg. Do you know which one you're using?

For me, so far, this seems the most sensible way of making an ISO image from an unprotected DVD. It's approximately 100K, works on any Windows version that I have, doesn't require installation, and comes from a trusted source (if MS software is compromised we're all toast any way).

I tried it on a 3GB DVD. Worked quickly. The DVD had a couple of thumb.db files that didn't copy. I'm guessing if I really wanted them there is probably an option for that in oscdimg's extensive command line options.

Btw: I used Windows 8 to open the ISO. Very nice.

No. I remember once wanting to edit an ISO. I can't remember why, but it could come in handy. I know Windows 8 can mount ISOs. I assume they can only be mounted Read Only.

I think the one posted up on that tutorial was win7 x86 version - works fine as x86 is cross platform.

I do alot of iso editing.

Poweriso is great for windows iso's in particular. The free version does all kinds of useful things - mounts, burns brilliantly, makes bootable usb drives, the only limitation on free version is that editing is limited to 300mb iso.

Does PowerISO let you mount an ISO as editable, and then treat it like a CD-R? In other words, not so much ISO editing, but a Virtual writable CD.

Sometimes it's useful to have a program like Windows Media Player export wav files to a virtual CD.

Btw, is there anything else useful in the Windows Automated Installation Kit?
