I use it all the time and I can't figure out how to pin it...

I just did it as a test. I have the Classic Shell installed on Win8.1 and put the word Search in the Search box then I right-clicked the item with the magnifying glass and dragged it to the Desktop, chose Create shortcut. Then I dragged it to the Taskbar. Don't know that procedure will work otherwise.

As Cliff said, shortcut keys are probably the best for something you use all the time. Alternatively, if you prefer something you can click see the following tutorials. Once you create the Shortcut you can save it somewhere, right-click and select 'Pin to Start'.
