Is there a better than decent way to get to the program list in windows 8, similar to the one we used to have on the start menu, without installing 3rd party applications?

What do you mean by program list? A list of installed programs?
Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Screenshot and Print
WinX > Programs and Features
Or do you want a list printed out in text format?

It's fine to use a start menu. I do not see why using 3rd party apps is a bad thing. It's ok. I use 3rd party apps all the time. Everybody does. I think Microsoft encourages the use of 3rd party apps. I think MS wants developers to sell 3rd party apps in large quantities. 3rd party apps are fine. I love this Decor8 thingy. And the other one from the store. Start menus are very useful.

If you are just looking for something similar to "ALL PROGRAMS" from the start menu,
I would always suggest the all apps area. Otherwise, it's 3rd party time

Nice One Shawn. I suggested a taskbar toolbar the other day and was sorely rebuffed.
They thought it was unacceptable.

I agree, that it is, another way, of doing it, when you know, what you are doing. Others say, no way, no how!
Others insist they need the extra features of a menu. They prefer a menu. ok. Thanks.
