Is Start Menu really matter?

I've assumed that the reason the Metro/Modern UI is on the desktop computer version, and why it's the default (boot up to) version, is the opportunity for MS to make money via purchased apps.

If no desktop computer user ever bought an app from the MS Store, I suspect the Metro/Modern UI focus might change. As long as people buy apps via the MS Store for the Metro/Modern UI on a desktop computer, it shall live on on the desktop computer.

If that was their plan, it's a bad plan as the vast majority of apps are all free....

"Free" apps have Ads. Ads that use the Microsoft advertising API. An API that generates them.... money. Possibly even MORE money that the 30% they charge developers for their 99 cent app in the store.

So the previous comment probably does still stand. And I've said it myself. Everything about Metro is about making MS more money after the OS sale. And it does it in MANY ways. Outright app purchases, in app purchases, advertising API and basically brainwashing people (as it is an advertisment all in itself) into wanting to buy Surfaces and Windows Phones.

I'm sure part of it is a means to make more money. Just like with every business ever.

Then they missed a huge opportunity by not allowing Windows 8 to work fully with lower resolution screens. People could have upgraded older machines and possibly become hooked on the new OS and interface. You don't need 10-point multi-touch for it to work, even older 2-point multi-touch screens would have been functional.

I have 13 free apps I use frequently, all of which don't have a lick of advertising. The only ones I have that do have an amount of adverting are the Bing apps and Xbox Music when I stream music.
