Hi,
because of XP soon death I'm looking for a new OS to upgrade,is it my configuration too old for w8.1 or should I go for W7?

I got lucky I guess, I'm running it on an AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHz plugged in an Asus M2N68-AM SE2 µATX Motherboard with 4 gigs of DDR2. It's my second desktop PC that I don't use all that much. It's no worse than it was running 7 as far as performance goes. I haven't benchmarked it so just going by my seat of the pants feeling while using it.

Windows 8.1 32 bit will run a bit nicer than 7, but I can tell you that if you're using the discrete graphics chip on that system, you won't be able to get a working display driver to run with Windows 8 at all. The resolution will max out I think at 1024x1028 if you really go at it and force SOMETHING to install... On Windows 7, usually a display driver for a PC that old will work perfectly, which is kind of a huge pain in the crotch since I'd prefer it to work with 8.1, but oh well. :D

I do suggest the upgrade advisor for sure, but it does depend on the support for older discrete GPUs. Some GPUs do work perfect in Windows 8, some don't, some do with hassle. From personal experience, a discrete AMD GPU from around 2005ish might be a hit or miss when it comes to driver support in 8/8.1.

Yes, for some reason support for older video cards for W8 and specially 8.1 is really scarce, MS must have changed the way GPU drivers work and GPU makers just couldn't be bothered (or they do not want to) make drivers for anything older than a generation or two back. That 7300 of mine is running on MS drivers, but not much is expected from it either. AMD/ATI is labeling drivers as "Legacy" for any cards under 5xxx series going down to the first of HD series, before that, nothing.

Hi !
I've tested for couple days W7sp1 and it freezes randomly specially when I stat some application (one of them is Google Chrome)
Yesterday I put windows 8.1 pro (not with latest updates) and all problems with freezing are gone,also it seems to be faster than w7
