Solved Is anyone on here happy with windows 8?

Microsoft Cloud terminal is also something I preach since day one, yesterday was the last day I used Office 365, since I have only 7 emails users in my domain, I switch to Google Business Apps, it's free and work very fine to manage my domain emails, even the paid version is cheaper than Office 365.

in French, but it's easy to guess what means expiré, lol

The sad thing is if they simply provided the options you suggested for a desktop version, Win8 would be an outstanding success. It has fine tuned Win7 to the max. And Win7 is an exceptionally good OS.

Yes why they don't see that is anyone's guess but my theory is that the marketing 'suits' have taken over running things at MS rather than the geeks and that has never spelled success at other companies and wont here I fear.

Y'all do KNOW Windows 7 was WHAT Vista was suppose to ACTUALLY be, right?

Yes, if I recall they had to drop all kinds of improvements because development of same was taking too long. Nevertheless I like Vista and it remains my main operating system.

That's a big 10-4!

I always thought Win7 was to Vista what Win98 2nd Ed was to Win98. So Win8 should be the ultimate tune up to Win7 ... and probably is in terms of the actual OS. The architecture changed radically in Vista compared to XP, but has stayed basically the same in Win7 & Win8.

People are strange critters to figure out. My son's a qualified computer techo and registered Microsoft system builder, and he only stopped using XP 6 months ago when I built him a new machine as a gift with SSD SATA3 Hard Drive, heaps of RAM, a fast CPU and Win7 Ultimate pre-installed. He said XP had always done everything he needed to do for personal use, and did it well. However, he admitted that once he started using Win7 it was no contest.

I have Vista Ultimate on my back-up machine with only an Intel i5-2400 CPU, onboard graphics, 8GB of RAM and an SSD SATA3 hard drive. And I have to say there is not a lot of difference in performance to Win7 Ultimate 64bit, running on an i7-960 CPU, SSD SATA3 hard drive, extreme mobo, 12GB RAM and GTX550 Ti graphics card. If need be I could live quite comfortably doing all my normal stuff on Vista no drama.

Would have to agree 100% with that. What is the status of Bill Gates? Does he have any real power for implementation of Microsoft's marketing policies, or is he just a figurehead for advertising purposes and right out of the loop power wise?

The i5-2400 Sandybridge is 4 cores, whereas the i7-960 is 4 cores, 8 threads and is just under the extreme range. This benchmark from CPU Benchmark here shows i7-960 ahead of both i5-2400 & i5-2500. Intel comparisons show the same. I have tried Windows 7 on both i5-2400 & i7-960 and i7 is significantly faster in data transfer from a storage partition on the same hard drive, and from an external USB3 hard drive.

This is a pic of results from CPU Benchmark.

poppa bear are you kidding, the i7-960 is old generation, it as been replace with Sandy Bridge and Sandy Bridge-e and in few week it will even be more with the new Ivy , this benchmark is not worth at all, it's meanless, no one use it, it's base on what ?. If you want talk seriously with me show me relevent information. Your reference about the data transfer of an external USB 3 make no sense; 4 , 6 or even 8 cores have nothing to do in the data transfer rates ( speed) .

just look at an example with future mark, the i5-2400 come very close to the 6 cores 12 treads i7-980x

futuremark.jpg

look at photoshop benchmark, this little i5-2400 overtake a 6 cores 12 treads i7-980x Extreme Edition

Before replying to my posts please do me the courtesy of reading it thoroughly before ranting and raving with a whole lot of irrelevant data. You missed the whole point of what I said. It was to compare the speed of Win7 to Vista; not a debate about CPUs.

Of course the performance of the CPUs mentioned don't compare to the lastest because they're over a year old. Duuuuhhhh!

But at the time of purchase the i5-2400 cost $182, and the i7-960 cost $382 because it was far superior! Look up the Intel data. And the next i7 above the 960 was over $1,000 and was in the extreme range, at that time!

In terms of real time data transfer tests the i7 won hands down from first hand experience. If you can't accept that I don't really give a hoot. I'm not interested in trying to prove anything to you. Do your own research for your own benefit and believe what you want.

area 66 said:

This statement is simply not true. Hyper threading can "talk to" more processors at the same time. If you're really open minded on the subject watch this Youtube review of data transfer rates comparing i5 & i7 processors by clicking here. It says i7 can transfer data at twice the rate of i5.

My results from CPU Benchmark show a direct comparison between the i5-2400 and the i7-960.
Your benchmark tests don't even list the i7-960! So whose results are meaningless! Double Duuuuuhhh!

The i7-960 would have to be tested in the same environment as the i5. Which is what was done in the CPU Benchmark test.

As far as I'm concerned this subject is finished.

Can't believe it, you seriously think a i7 have disk transfer twice faster than a i5 ???? you was talking about disk transfer rate, and this Video show DMI and QPI transfer rate. Aside the youtube compare an old i5-750 , the DMI of the i5-4200 is 5 GT/s so it's more than the 4,8 GT/s of the i7-960

oh ya, and between the i7-960 and the EE you have the i7-970 and the i7-980 ( non extreme edition )

I'm very much chill, I just corrected the mistake Poppa bear made, I don't want someone who read it, think his hard drive will go twice faster on a i7

Aside closing the treads on if we like Windows 8 or not will may be not a bad idea, we know that peoples in majority don't like to be force to use Metro.
