Solved Internet (LAN) disconnects after 5 seconds.

#1
I'm loving Windows 8 Consumer Preview so far.
However, my internet connection (Cable/LAN/Hikari Fiber) is disconnecting after 5 or so seconds.
I'm using a Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (on an Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Motherboard).

The system is dual booting with Windows 7 and that connection is perfectly OK.

To get it to work again (for 5 seconds) I have to disable and re-enable the controller, and sometimes it seems necessary to delete the connection and set up another one.

Fortunately my connection is fast so I was able to stubbornly update a few small files via Windows Update by reconnecting many times, with a few % progress each time! Non of those updates were related to the connection hardware or this issue though.

So far I've tried (numerous times):

1. (The above update procedure, in case of hardware updates.)
2. Disabling and enabling the controller, and setting up the connection again.
3. (Swapping the drivers with Windows 7's, and then back to the originals.)
4. Re-installing Windows 8
5. Searching Marvell's site for driver updates.
6. Searching Asus's site for updates.
7. (Connection Login and Password are correct)

Points of note:

a. Windows 7 (dual boot) is connecting fine.
b. This is a hobby, so basic stuff should have been covered, but please advise anyway.
c. The timezone, date and time are set correctly.

This motherboard is very popular, and I don't see similar issues online, other than maybe wireless ones.
I wouldn't have expected things to be too different from Windows 7. I'm expecting it is a simple driver issue.

Can't wait to get it all working. Loving it so far. More customizable than people first see..

Cheers for any advice/help.

OK. It's finally fixed. I should have thought of this sooner.

1. Uninstall the LAN drivers.
2. Get the MarvellYukon_Ethernet_V111053_Windows7 update drivers from Asus (Windows 7 / LAN).
3. To install them in Windows 8 Consumer Preview, run them in Windows 7 compatibility mode.
(Right click the setup program, choose the compatibility tab, Tick/check `Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and choose `Windows 7' from the pull-down menu.)
4. Hit Apply and/or Enter.
5. Run the program and install the drivers.
6. Reboot.

This is easy for many, but hopefully helpful for some.

Loving Windows 8 Consumer Preview!

Make sure that Windows 8 isn't set to automatically find and install updates.

Then, if I were you, I'd uninstall the LAN driver and disable and delete your internet/LAN connections etc. in Windows 8.
Reboot the PC.

Somehow get the drivers from here (Downloads) after choosing 32 or 64 bit Windows 7 as the OS: ASUS - P6T Deluxe V2

Install that driver and restart your PC.
Then setup the LAN connection again within Windows.
(If necessary, you might need to do the compatibility things mentioned in post #2 (but try these previous steps first, word for word.))

When everything is OK, make sure that Windows 8 checks for updates but doesn't install them. Then you will see an optional update appear for Marvell LAN...Gigabit Ethernet Controller. DON'T install it, otherwise you'll have the same problem again.

I hope this helps you. Have a great week.

PS. I have an ASUS P6T Deluse V2 motherboard. This might not help you at all if you have a different setup, like a laptop. You might search for Windows 7 LAN drivers from your Laptop manufacturers website. Windows 8 simply needs the Win 7 LAN driver in my opinion.

my model is Sony Vaio VPCEB3M1E .... even if you don't find the perfect model (because mine has some custom features) they all have the same Lan card.

My Dell Inspiron 1525 has the same network card. Go to Marvell Technology Group Ltd.. Click on the "support >driver download" tab at the top of the page. Select the Windows 8 installer dated 10/26/12 and download the zip file. Unzip and run the setup.exe file. It should install version 12.10.10.3 which is the driver that I am using successfully in Windows 8. Good Luck!

Great. That should do it then. Go with mick823.
Failing that here is the last listed driver for your model number which you could try running with Windows 7 permissions. The Sony Windows 8 support page doesn't list your model number under the VPCEB category.

Thank you man, i will try it, and i hope it works... even though i still think it might be a modem problem, maybe the modem does not support windows 8, that's just my guessing.

Hi - Thanks a bunch! I too registered just to respond because what you gave me WORKED! I upgraded an ASUS P5B mobo PC that was running Windows 8 without problem to Windows 8.1 and all sort of headaches with the LAN. I saw shared computers here and there, but mostly my shared driver on my Netgear Router was missing. I tried many things found on multiple searches, suspected and thought of going back to Windows 7 drivers and then saw your post. I uninstalled the Yukon drivers and installed the Windows 7 drivers using compatibility mode. Works great!!! Thanks again!
