Internet Dropping, 'Default Gateway is not Available'

Hi folks,

I don't mean to be rude by signing up just to ask for help, but I'm kinda struggling. You might be familiar with this issue already but by internet is dropping out frequently, displaying as 'Limited' with no access. Running troubleshooter fixes it by resetting the network adapter, tells me 'the default gateway is not available', and it works for a while until it opts to drop out again. It's a little irritating. I've had to rewrite this post because the connection dropped while I was typing and I submitted without realising.

I'm using a Lenovo Z585, which has a wireless Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter. I've seen several topics about the same issue on this very forum, but unfortunately none of the offered solutions have worked for me. I forget everything I've tried as I've been at this over a year and only just decided to ask for help, but I've done the following recently;

*Made sure that 'allow the computer to turn off this device' is unchecked in Power Management.
*Updated the adapter's manufacturer drivers to the most modern version, and also the Microsoft option (connection drops entirely and forces a roll back in both cases). Current driver is dated from 2012.
*Manually entered the gateway IP (though there's a fair chance I did this incorrectly)
*Restarted the DHCP service

If anybody has any further potential options, I would be most grateful.
Here's my full ipconfig if it's required.

Forget everything you posted, along with the unneeded ipconfig info. Really what is going on (give the short version)? Open up Cmd and post the output of "netsh wlan show all". You need to copy the output, and then save it to a text file, so that you can post it into a post.

Also what is the manufacturer & model of the Gateway you are using?

Sorry. Most threads I saw asked for the ipconfig, so I gave it.

As I said in the OP, my connection frequently changes to 'limited' and loses internet access. Troubleshooting briefly fixes it and reports 'The default gateway is not available'.

Not sure what you by manufacturer and model of the gateway, but my network adaptor is manufactured by Broadcom and the model is 802.11n.

And here's the netsh result.

We only ask for it, if you there is a DNS issue. Since the majority that come on here use WiFi. I always ask for the one that I posted.

The Farbar tools over at Bleepingcomputer.com, do a good job in fixing most DNS issues.

For the Gateway, that info would be on a sticker on the side, or accessed through the admin interface.

Dropouts can be caused by channel congestion, too far away from the unit, or just a bad Gateway all together.

Sorry, by gateway you're referring to the router right? It's a Virgin Media SuperHub VMDG485.
I tried the Farbar Service Scanner but it wasn't able to help me.

As for my router, I don't think distance is a factor due to the randomness of the connection dropping. My sister uses the very same laptop as I do and is further away from the router, but I'm the only person using the router to have issues.

Distance can cause a factor. You are getting 72% radio range. In your case, it could be a faulty device from Virgin, or it is setting too far for the computer to get a good quality signal, so it is dropping and rescanning, or the gateway is dropping and rescanning.

I understand distance can be a factor but I fail to understand how that would be the case here. I'm fairly close to the router, bringing it even closer when I'm having trouble doesn't help, and it's pretty much the same when I'm further away, in my bedroom. And again, nobody else has any trouble. A signal strength of 87% seems sufficient. Seems most likely that the issue is with my laptop.

Yes, I have suggestions.

1. If you're using wireless, change the wireless channel to an available number instead of auto assign. This will help when you have other "wireless" devices in the house.
2. Make sure your router is using the latest firmware.
3. Make sure your wireless NIC is using the latest driver. If the driver from the manufacture is newer than the one from the maker of the laptop, then use the one from the wireless manufacture.

I had a similar issue once where all the older devices would connect to the wireless router and the newer devices would connect and drop. The solution was to buy a newer router and all devices connected and worked as advertised.

Hope this helps.
