Hey all!
New to the forums (after EOL of 8, of course ). Haven't run it personally since 2017, and I switched to 10 on my primary even before that, but have always been a strong defender of the operating system. Always thought about returning to it as my daily driver, now I can't really 😥.
But my grandad still runs Windows 8.1, and when we went computer shopping last week we were massively underwhelmed by the selection of Windows 11 laptops out there (plus, I can't stand using Windows 11 so I never really wanted him to have to use it anyway).
He's staying on 8.1 for now, but is very security-conscious so probably won't want to stay massively long.

So my question is: since I saw on one of these threads that you can install Windows Server 2012 updates on 8, how easy is it, and how do I do it?
If not, I'm going to try to put 10 on his computer (already tried once, but it literally got to 10 then reversed everything. Damn it, MS.

Anyway, thanks for reading.

Hi,

Installing Windows Server 2012 updates on Windows 8 is not officially supported and may cause compatibility issues. Additionally, Windows Server 2012 is a server operating system and is not designed for use as a desktop operating system.

As for installing Windows 10 on your grandfather's computer, it's important to note that the upgrade process from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 can be tricky and may not always be successful. It's always a good idea to create a backup of all important data before attempting an upgrade, and also to make sure that the computer meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 10.

One thing to consider is that Microsoft no longer provides security updates for Windows 8.1, so it's important to be mindful of that when deciding whether to stick with Windows 8.1 or upgrade to Windows 10.

It's probably the best idea to consult a professional if you are not familiar with the process and make sure that the computer meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 10.

You're able to install Server 2012 R2 updates on 8.1 machine ( most of em ), can be obtained from Update Catalog.

Yeah Christian was just touting the "Microsoft Line". Yes there can possibly be the odd compatibility issue with updates from a server OS. However, they are also labelled as windows8rt-kbxxxxx.msu. It's all from the same codebase.
