Hi there
you CAN install windows to go on an external USB drive and all downloads etc work normally.

I use an old 2.5 inch laptop hdd. create say 2 partitions -- one for the OS and another one for the data.

Works fine 100%.

Note that there are a few get arounds for the USB problem but I'm quite happy to have my Windows to go on a small ext usb drive.

Cheers

How do you power these 2.5" drives Jimbo, for instance when connecting to a laptop - the USB 5v output isn't enough is it? Don't you need a 12v input too?

I have 4 of 2.5 drives in USB enclosures (approx £7each) they come with with a special usb cable with a single usb which is plugged into the drive and two usb connecters at the other. The drives all run on 5v but sometimes the host (laptop say) does not put out enough power on a single connection so 2 plugged in doubles the power (not the voltage). However my 4 have never required the second usb plug to be connected but I guess they would if plugged to a passive (non-powered) hub with even more devices connected.
