Here is an example to replace the icon for C drive to be Windows shield.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\C\DefaultIcon]
@="%SystemRoot%\\System32\\imageres.dll,1"

Just make an ICO file of the drive with a background image.

What do you want the back ground to be?

Not sure if you can change the back ground. I don't think there is one, its a icon. Just create a new picture of the existing one but with a new back ground.

You could do it in XP, by editing the desktop.ini file.

I don't think that feature is supported in more recent versions of Windows.
I haven't tried it though.
