Inconsistent Internet

So on my laptop which has decent specs my internet is really consistent i think i might have an idea to what i did but the fix is a last resort my internet used to work fine for this laptop but now it is getting like 3 bars and im getting better connections to other houses internet so i think what i did is one day i was trying to make the internet speed faster so i unplugged the router from my modem then when i looked back in there was like this weird goo inside it so i spent an hour and finally got my router to plug back in but ever since my internet has been way slower and it has been a problem since on fortnite i get 300-1000 ping constantly i have tried many fixes such as trouble shooting , changing the power saving mode , i had a ethernet cable which worked perfect but since school is starting i have to get rid of it since it is like 40 ft long running through the whole house so if anyone has anything that might fix it please tell me [Not gonna system reset my internet is slow as it is and i have 400gb of data on here
