Solved Improving remote desktop connection speed

I have a home WIFI network set up as per the graphic below.

Using XRDP the Windows box can make a remote connection to the Ubuntu machine, but the connection is so slow that it has no practical use.

I also tried Splashtop, but I was unable to connect to Ubuntu from Windows. Splashtop support were unable to offer the necessary support to resolve the issue (Splashtop for Ubuntu is a Beta version).

As an experiment, I installed the Splashtop client app on an Android tablet. The Android tablet was able to remotely access the Ubuntu machine via Splashtop and the connection is very fast. The Android test suggests to me that there is an issue with the Windows client/Windows settings, perhaps security related, that is causing an extreme slow down of the connection.

Any ideas as to how I could provide a fast remote desktop connection from Windows to Ubuntu for my scenario?

Click on RDC choose Show Options, click on Experience tab, experiment with the different options, mine is set to a High-speed broadband connection.

Thanks for the suggestion, but in this case experimenting with the connection speed options made no noticeable difference.

RDP will never be as fast as being on the actual machine. No matter what program you use. The closes would be Teamviewer.

Hi there.

Streaming quantities of video over Wifi is never going to be OK unless you have a Wifi connection of AT LEAST 2 Mbs / sec. RDP sends full screens a lot. You can improve the connection speed if you lower the video quality of what RDP is sending.

The main problem though is likely to be your SLOW WIFI connection. Note - even if your Router can supply a decent WIFI speed your WIFI card might be a LOT slower.

Thanks for the suggestions/comments. I'll probably give up on XRDP as a solution.

After months of trying, on and off, I finally achieved a Splashtop connection between my Windows PC and the Ubuntu machine. The key change was an iptables command on the Ubuntu side.

In terms of video streaming, I was able to watch a 720p clip for the most part without lagging. This is on the same combination of machines where XRDP was so slow as to be unviewable. Not sure how stable an app Splashtop is for the Windows -> Ubuntu case, so in the longer term I may replace what I've got with a Windows Server/DirectAccess solution.
