My install of Windows 7 Pro has become a nightmare for me.
I liked the way it worked but now I cannot deal with it.
The latest, I do not have permission to move or delete items from the Desktop.
I am the Administrator!
I do not want to get into the whys and wherefores, I just give up.
Is there a concise document for a Novice that will allow me to go from W7P to W8.1P without a stop at W8.0P?

"On its face it sounds like a user account mess up.

Go to C:\Users\[your username]\Desktop and right click the desktop folder. Select Properties and chose the Security tab. Do you have full control?

Have any other issues in your profile? Corrupt User Profile: Fix for Windows 10, 11, XP, Vista, 7, 8 (I hope when you installed software it was always for all users. This is what I do even if there's one account)."

Mike,
I see you're in FL but you don't say were. It's a very big state!
I'm in FL too, near Ocala.

If I had your PC here, I could help you install Windows 8.1/Pro and save all your data.
I have both Windows 8.1/Pro/64 and x86 both, on Flash Drives.
That's your first step, having the appropriate 8.1 on a bootable flash drive.

I too ran Windows 7 for years, and I thought I would run it till I die. But it got corrupted and I just
couldn't deal with it anymore. So I made the jump to Windows 8.1 and I've never looked back.

Drop me a PM if I can help you,
TM

Mike,
You've not been back since April 16, so I have to ask....."Did you get it all sorted out?"

Since you last posted, I've installed Windows 8.1 several times, with NO problems.

Y'all come back now, Y'hear?

Life has been a challenge!
My wife Camille had a major heart attack on April 20th.
Thank God for excellent Clearwater Fire Department EMT's!
She and I did not recognize the symptoms and waited to call 911.
She initially became nauseous and assumed she picked up something from the grandkids.
Then about 15 to 30 minutes later the chest pressure began, and we panicked, call 911 for help.
She was in the operating room within five minutes of arriving at the Hospital.
She survived but sustained some heart damage.
On the follow up visit, I was with her, and the surgeon ordered a stress test to rule out additional stents.
He asked about me and my heart as I have a 20-year history to include one "bare metal" stent.
Since my heart doctor died about three years ago, I did not have a current condition to give him.
I have been getting winded and exhausted this past year after five minutes of exertion and often very sleepy.
We both had stress tests and she did not need additional stents.
I however had about a 95% blockage of the "bare metal" stent and he did several balloon angioplasties on it.
He additionally installed another stent in a vestal that was 90% blocked.
Boy, did we ever luck out.
At 76 and 78, Camille and I are skating on thin ice!

Yes, these issues slowed / stopped my migration from 7 to 8.1.

I am also afraid to start at this time because of 7 issues we are experiencing.
A simple one but one that I cannot explain or fix is all of my email goes into the Junk Mail Folder.
I mean everything!
So until I can address this, I'm afraid to proceed.

Thanks again for thinking of me and my migration dream.

Best regards,

Mike Lynch

So, you're in FL. But, where in FL? If you're close enough, I'd love to help you with your problem.
I upgraded quite simply from 7 to 8.1. I set up a fresh install of 8.1 on a new HD, including all my favorite programs, then copied all my data files from 7 to 8.1 using my 1TB Flash Drive as a Transporter. I still have that HD with Win-7/Pro/64 on it, just in case there is something on there that I might need.
I probably spent two or three hours on the entire job. That included several phone calls and one Potty Break. lol

I'm retired but not dead. I work with these OS's all the time. It's no longer my vocation....it's now my hobby.
Cheers Mate!

Mike, I hope you and your wife are still OK.
At 79 I'm doing pretty well, with only some very minor health problems.
Still keeping my hand in with the PC's and OS's. And still running windows 8.1/Pro/64 on a little Acer Aspire X-1200 (slimline desktop PC)
Keep in touch.

TM in Ocala,
