I am trying to reformat my pc but I get an error saying:

"The computer started using Windows Installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade. [DO not select !custom [advanced] to perform an upgrade. !custom advance installs a new copy of Windows and deletes your programs and settings"
What is wrong with my pc? I have reformatted a number of times but this is the first time I have ever encountered this error?

I have tried to repair my pc but it ends up saying "unable to reset your pc. a required drive partition is missing."

I have no idea what of what is going on. Please help?

Note: I am not really familiar with computers and I am a noob. Please be gentle!

It appears you are using UPGRADE media..

Download and create windows 8.1 setup media > Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

then boot from that setup media and continue with a clean installation

so then I will use that usb as me "Windows recovery disk"

yes, unless your create an OEM type recovery partition
or use a 3rd party program that takes benefit of a windows program to create customrefresh images > RecImg Manager - Backup & Restore for Windows 8 and Mobile Devices!

You need to select the option "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)".
