I have a HP Pavilion, that had not been used in a while, because the HD went bad. I replaced the hd, and ordered Windows 8 reinstallation disk. My question is, is there a way that I can find out if the original OS was 32 or 64 bit? There are no external stickers on this laptop (grandson pulled them off). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does the computer have more than 4GB of RAM? If the computer has more than 4GB of RAM then you should install 64-bit, otherwise install 32-bit. A possible exception would be if that you planned to update to more than 4GB of RAM in the future then you should install 64-bit now even if it currently has only 4GB.

Since you will be installing the OS from scratch, it isn't really important which bit version was on it originally. You will need to make sure you get the correct 32 or 64 bit drivers from the HP website when you do the install.
