I just had to send a scan to a client of mine using my Brother Printer/Fax/Scan device.
I never installed the Brother software for the device but once I placed the document on the scanner and selected "Scan Image," lo and behold, Win8 8102 perked up and scanned it with the Windows Fax and Scanner app.

Built-in software does the very basic of functions. Much like built-in wifi.
Did you install the driver at all?
What's the error when you run the install from the CD provided with the printer?

This is only supported Windows XP, Vista, Me/2000 only, other os you need to install need to download from the internet. My operating system is not listed there.
Unfortunately, many device drivers are not working on on Windows 8 Developer Preview. Of course, this was expected as we're still in pre-beta but it would still be a good idea to set up a dual boot (if you haven't already) and use another OS. Instructions can be found below.
