Anyone familiar with Husqvarna Viking Software aka HVS?Among other things they develop and market software designed to produce elaborate sewing programs to operate various ( and quite costly) Embroidery Sewing Machines. My wife has been hooked on this hobby for a number of years and it appears the software and hardware ( Embroidery SewingMachines) update quite frequently. She is up to Version 5, which has now exceeded my limited PC expertise to fixsoftware problems. In the past these new versions were sold with DVD's that contained all software to completely upgrade. Lately new versions are so large that only one disk is provided and it redirects the buyer to the internet to down load horrendous gigabyte files. On version 5 our ISP cut us off after 6 hours of D/L and 43% complete on just one file. We have DSL which is usually fast enough for all previous requirements. With the help of my wife's local Sewing Dealer, Viking agreed to remotely take over my wife's PC and baby sit the D/L and install it. Yes, it works, however, now the wife wants the program transferred from her HP Windows Vista, 64 bit desk top to her HP Windows 8 laptop which I believe is also 64 bit. This will enable her to take the laptop to her sewing dealer for lessons. HOW DO I DO THAT?

No idea. Since you don't even know how it was installed, we have even less knowledge.

Sounds like you may have to have Viking babysit the installation to the Laptop as well, after several more days of downloads.

Oh, and there's no guarantee the program will even be compatible with Windows 8.

They used that program at a place that made special logos for hats and stuff. I don't know where they get it, It may come with the machine that makes the embroidery.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
There is a chance it's one program file or something that can be run independantly from a folder on it's own.

Try right clicking the icon on the desktop on the old desktop PC and choose open file location and see what is there.....

You may be able to just copy the whole folder over your wifi network (I'm assuming you have one) to the win 8 laptop and re-create a desktop shortcut to the program file.

I only can suggest you, whith some patience, how to overcome the download problem,
simply using "mozilla firefox" as web browser; it will manage to resume the download
from the point you are beeing cut off.

Hi there
IMO probably the simplest way to do this is to create a VISTA Virtual Machine then you can use the software without any change -- in any case there's no guarantee if the software is quite old that it would even work on W8 - especially for that type of software.

To convert the VISTA machine to a VM use the VMware conversion tool (free) and then use VMware player (also free) to run the Vista VM on your laptop. The conversion tool will create a VM from the PHYSICAL running VISTA machine.

absolutely 100% -- in fact using VM's is the standard way of running legacy software and hardware -- I'm still using Minidiscs for some music studio applications --these won't even THINK of running on W7 / W8 but work perfectly on an XP Virtual machine.

I've also got a PRO image scanner (A3+ size) which also will only run on XP. Works perfectly on the VM.

VMware player is FREE and download from the VMware site.

There's no guarantee that if the software isn't old it will work in W8 either. There's also no guarantee it will work in a virtual machine, since we're talking about software that works with a hardware device. It may require the use of custom hardware drivers that won't work in a VM.

Finally, the licensing issues are not as simple as you seem to think they are. You are not legally allowed to run a copy of Vista in a VM on W8 without a separate license for Vista.

Thanks for response

I finally got some help from the software folks. Got the core files necessary to get the Windows 8 laptop up and running. All the files are way out of date and the now the task is to d/l updates, updates, and more updates. This laptop is sort of a price leader. The operations are very sloooow. But hey it's working! :DThanks again for your imput.

There is a restriction of migrating a physical machine to a VMware virtual machine - and that will probably apply to most installations.

NOTE You cannot move original equipment manufacturer (OEM) licenses between physical machines. The
license is attached to the server when you purchase it from the OEM and cannot be reassigned. You can only
reassign retail and volume licenses to new physical servers. If you migrate an OEM Windows image, you must
have a Windows Server Enterprise or Datacenter Edition license to run multiple virtual machines
