Solved How to start programs in safe mode from the start screen?

All my MS Office 2013 programs crashed tonight and I'm trying to figure out what happened. I'm following the instructions here:

This is the section I'm trying to follow:

Starting the application in Safe Mode is a great way to find out if the problem is caused by and add-in. To do this, go to your Start screen in Windows 8 or click Start > Run in Windows 7, and type one of the following commands:

• Type excel /safe and press Enter to start Excel 2013.
  
• Type outlook /safe and press Enter to start Outlook 2013.
  
• Type winword /safe and press Enter to start Word 2013.
  

I'm at the start screen and the only place to type anything is in the search box. Is this correct? Because when I type outlook/safe here, it just brings up articles about opening Outlook in safe mode. Isn't it supposed to launch Outlook? What am I doing wrong?

This may be the wrong place to say this, but I HATE windows 8. Sorry.

Well that worked for me, make sure you get the spacing's on the forward slash correct. The top sections was Program start excel safe mode. I clicked it and excel opened in safe mode? I don't think this has anything to do with windows 8.1 seem the method was the same in windows 7
I'm no Office expert but it sounds like you have some seriously damaged files in Office, you could try a repair install perhaps that would fix them for you.:huh:

use the RUN box for those commands

right click start flag - select RUN enter cmd

Okay, I got it up but it says "Sorry, we couldn't find safe.xslx. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?" Ugh, I'm at a loss. Is there a MS Office forum here?

control panel > programs and features > select office 2013 > select change > then repair

Well, it's still repairing and I need to get to bed. Will try this again tomorrow after work and post my results. Much thanks to both for the quick advice.

I turned on my computer tonight and things were a mess. The Office repair was still going on, all MS Office programs were busy, and my system tray showed some type of maintenance going on, which if I remember was running yesterday too. I thought I messed things up worse. I stopped the maintenance then restarted the computer. When it came back up, a window came up saying the MS Office repair was done. I checked all Office programs and they seem to be working. Beats me, but the crisis seems to be over. So thanks again for your help, and I will mark this as solved!
