How to run old games on windows 8.1 x64

is there anything i can do in order to play old games on my windows 8.1 HP Widescreen, example like Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time. I installed it fine but cannot launch the game. I try to set compatibility mode but no luck. any help?

Normally a simple fix such as turning off anti aliasing or turning off fog or something of that matter corrects stuff such as this. According to the Microsoft website the game is compatible so I only assume you can get to the options section.

'But no luck'? What exactly happens? Does it launch, crash during the game. Also what version of Windows are you selecting in compatibility mode? Systems specs please too.

I've tested over 100 games on Windows 8.1 including earlier Windows and DOS games but have found only a very, very few that don't work.

DOS games really? I would love to see a working Mega Race ( no dosbox/similar program to make it work )

Edit: Sorry I just re-read what I typed. I don't mean my comment in a sarcastic/mean way. I really do want to see Mega Race in Windows 8 without using dosbox or something.
