How to remove mail app?

I'd like to be rid of the mail app, entirely, not just an account in it.

When I try to email a poster in Craigslist, the damn thing shows up, takes the whole screen, and my normal email "app" (Thunderbird) is left without a copy of what I sent.

How do I permanently get rid of this thing?

If you like, you could uninstall the modern "Mail" app.
